Lifehacker asked the urologist.
Cystitis is an infectious disease. But we are told that it is impossible to sit on a cold one. Where is the truth? The urologist answers.
No it is not true. You cannot get cystitis or chill the kidneys (usually this phenomenon is understood as pyelonephritis - inflammation of the renal calyx-pelvis system), sitting on a cold stone or other surface. This is a myth that is widespread only in the CIS countries.
In the vast majority of cases, both of these diseases are caused by bacteria, most often E. coli. There is no connection between sitting on a cold surface and the appearance of E. coli in the urine.
There is currently no adequate scientific research confirming that sitting on a cold surface can somehow reduce immunity and lead to the activation of bacteria in the urine. However, many are well aware that after hypothermia, frequent urination appears.
This is not cystitis, but a manifestation of a special reflex - cold diuresis.
This phenomenon consists in the fact that during hypothermia, the body seeks to reduce heat loss and sharply reduces blood flow in the skin, redistributing it to vital organs, especially the kidneys. Enhanced urine filtration begins. In addition, a full bladder is also a source of heat loss. Therefore, the body seeks to empty it as soon as possible. This leads to increased urination, but frequent urination is not cystitis.
If a person has sat in a cold place and is very cold, upon returning to a warm room, you need to drink 2-3 cups of warm liquid to replenish the water balance.
