"The Witcher", "The Mandalorian", "Good Omens" and other projects that everyone will watch and discuss in the coming year.
Witcher
- Creator: Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.
- Cast: Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra, Joey Baty.
One of the most talked about projects of recent times is overgrown with the first details. The series, based on the series of works by Andrzej Sapkowski, is due out on Netflix in the second half of 2019. The appointment of Henry Cavill to the lead role caused a lot of controversy, and the first shots from the camera test added even more fuel to the fire. But in any case, fans of the original books and fans of the series of games are waiting for the series.
The details of the plot have not yet been disclosed, but showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich promised to pay full attention to the original material. Considering that before that "The Witcher" had only a cheap Polish film adaptation, it is likely that the new project will fall in love with the audience. Moreover, Netflix invests a lot of money in the series, and several episodes will be directed by Alik Sakharov, who previously worked on such projects as Game of Thrones, Black Sails, Rome and Boardwalk Empire.
Mandalorian
- Creator: Jon Favreau.
- Cast: Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Nick Nolte.
Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Lion King) is working on the first Star Wars fictional series. According to the published synopsis, the plot will tell about a mercenary - a native of the same planet as Django and Boba Fetta. The action will develop seven years after the Battle of Yavin ("A New Hope") and, accordingly, before the events of "The Force Awakens".
Favreau will direct two episodes of the first season himself. The pilot will be directed by Dave Filoni, who has already worked on animation projects from the world of Star Wars. There will also be episodes from Taiki Waititi (Real Ghouls, Thor: Ragnarok) and Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones). The famous studio Industrial Light & Magic ("Star Wars", "Transformers", "Harry Potter") will be engaged in special effects. All this means that they are betting on the series and it will at least impress with its filming and scale. The release is expected by the end of 2019.
Good signs
- Creator: Neil Gaiman.
- Cast: David Tennant, Michael Sheen, John Hamm.
Mini-series based on the work of the same name by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. The plot revolves around the demon Crowley (David Tennant) and the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen). They have been living on Earth for a long time and are on friendly terms. On the night of the birth of the antichrist child, they decide to unite their forces and educate him as a simple person in order to avoid the end of the world.
Charming actors were selected for the series, in addition, it was developed and shot by Neil Gaiman himself. So the audience will have a great story filled with bright humor. Six half-hour episodes are planned, all of which will air on Amazon Prime in the first half of 2019.
Keepers
- Creator: Damon Lindelof.
- Cast: Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Regina King.
The series based on the legendary comic "Watchmen" will be released on HBO. So far, very little has been said about the plot. Project author Damon Lindelof (Left Behind) claims that it will not be a remake or sequel to the original comic book or the film of the same name by Zach Snyder. The action will be transferred to our days, and some of the heroes will be newcomers. However, they promise to show classic characters as well. For example, Jeremy Irons has to play an aged superhero Ozymandius - the smartest and fastest man on Earth.
The release date is still unknown. The pilot episode will be directed by Nicole Cassel (Better Call Saul, Vinyl). The soundtrack will be written by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails.
Murderous class
- Created by Anthony and Joe Russo.
- Cast: Benedict Wong, Benjamin Wadsworth, Lana Condor.
The plot tells the story of a homeless teenager Marcus Lopez, who accidentally ends up in an elite private school for murderers. This institution gathers the most dangerous young criminals and children of killers and teaches them the wisdom of the craft, teaching such sciences as 101 ways of dismemberment. But such activities are contrary to Marcus's worldview.
The author of the original comic strip, Rick Remender, himself directed the filming, and the series is produced by the Russo brothers - the directors of the last two parts of "The Avengers". The first season kicks off on Syfy on January 16, 2019.
Real ghouls
- Creators: Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement.
- Cast: Kaivan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou.
The authors of the film What We Do in the Shadows, which for some reason received the title "Real Ghouls" in the Russian box office, are expanding the universe of their heroes. Following Wellington, Paranormal, they and FX are releasing an American reworking of the original film.
The plot tells about three vampires who live in the same house in New York for centuries. The filmmakers Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement are directly involved in the project - a silly but funny script is provided. The series kicks off in spring 2019.
Umbrella Academy
- Creator: Steve Blackman.
- Cast: Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Robert Sheehan.
The series is based on the comics of former My Chemical Romance vocalist Gerard Way. The plot tells the story of children with supernormal abilities. For example, the head of Space Boy was transplanted onto the body of a gorilla, and he even endures the cold of space, and Rumor is able to change reality with the help of deception. As a child, they were all brought together and adopted by the alien Reginald Hargreaves. Later, some members of the academy gather for their mentor's funeral and band together to confront a former colleague.
Umbrella Academy promises a fresh take on superhero stories. The powers of the main characters are really unusual, and the plot is filled with humor and non-standard situations. The series will air on Netflix on February 15, 2019.
Boys
- Created by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
- Cast: Laz Alonso, Jennifer Esposito, Karl Urban.
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have already featured one screen adaptation of the Garth Ennis comic, the Preacher TV series. This time they took as a basis the project of the same author. The plot tells about a world where superheroes have become real stars. But, as often happens, behind the scenes, they begin to allow themselves very unpleasant things. Then the CIA decides to create a special squad "Boys". Its members must put in place the arrogant superheroes, and, if necessary, eliminate them.
Rogen is famous for his harsh and sharp humor. And it looks like this series will become another alternative to the typical superhero stories.
Twilight Zone
- Creator: Jordan Peel.
- Cast: Adam Scott, Kumail Nanjiani, John Cho.
The author of the 2017 hit "Get Out" Jordan Peele decided to relaunch the classic anthology series. In the original, each episode of "The Twilight Zone" told a separate story on the verge of science fiction, horror and mysticism. What will happen this time is still unknown, but the popularity of "Black Mirror" and Saw's penchant for satire suggest that the new plots will somehow be connected with modern realities.
Simon Kinberg (writer of X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Marco Ramirez (Sons of Anarchy, Defenders) are working with Jordan Peel on the series.
Blue Book Project
- Creator: Robert Zemeckis.
- Cast: Aidan Gillen, Michael Malarkey, Laura Mennell.
The author of Forrest Gump and the Back to the Future trilogy, Robert Zemeckis, is producing a series based in part on true events. The action takes place in the 50s of the last century. Astronomer Joseph Allen Hynek and US Air Force Captain Michael Quinn face UFO activity. Trying to understand their origins, they are met with resistance from the government, hiding these facts.
New dad
- Creator: Paolo Sorrentino.
- Cast: John Malkovich.
Technically, this is a continuation of the series Young Pope, but the author of the project - director Paolo Sorrentino - says that it should be taken exclusively as a separate story and the New Pope will practically not be associated with the first season.
The details of the plot were not disclosed, but it is known that John Malkovich will play the Pope, and Sorrentino will again personally film all the episodes. The release is scheduled for November 2019.
Swamp Thing
- Creator: Len Wiseman.
- Cast: Crystal Reed, Andy Bean, Derek Mears.
DC is trying to expand its universe with series on its own streaming service. "Swamp Thing" is based on the comic book series of the same name. It tells about Abby Arcane, a worker at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, who is trying to figure out the origin of the deadly swamp virus. The heroine meets her colleague Alec Holland, but he soon dies. However, Alec will still return to the world in the form of a conservationist who will be called the Swamp Thing.
The attention to the project is drawn by the fact that the master of horror James Wang acts as a consultant and producer. The pilot of the series is directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld). The Swamp Thing is planned to be released in the summer of 2019.
Through the snow
- Creator: Graham Manson.
- Cast: Jennifer Connelly, David Diggs, Stephen Ogg.
A remake of the film of the same name, which, in turn, is an adaptation of the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, has been in production for several years. The showrunner changed for the series, the pilot episode was re-filmed almost completely, the project was repeatedly frozen.
But now the work has gone in full measure, and in 2019 they promise to release "Through the Snow" on screens. As in the film, humanity will be represented here as passengers on a huge train. But if in the original the characters simply moved from the tail, where the poorest strata lived, to the head inhabited by the elite, then the series promises more complex relationships.
