There are dozens of names on the menu of coffee houses, and many of them are unknown to casual visitors. A life hacker will help you figure out the abundance of drinks and unusual ways of brewing coffee so that you do not get into trouble.
Hot coffee drinks
Espresso
A beverage for which hot water is passed under high pressure through a filter with ground coffee. Dozens of other types of coffee drinks are prepared on the basis of espresso.
Doppio
Above average coffee shops offer this drink as an espresso or double espresso, and the doppio position itself is often missing on the menu.
Ristretto
Coffee for those who like it stronger. The same espresso, but smaller and stronger.
Lungo
Lungo is an espresso that takes longer to spill, takes longer to cook. Has a less intense, but more bitter taste.
Americano
Americano is made from one or two servings of espresso, to which 30 to 470 ml of hot water is added.
Cappuccino
Espresso with hot milk, the top layer of which is whipped into an even glossy foam. It is customary to drink cappuccino without sugar, it is delicious due to the natural sweetness of milk.
Latte
There are some differences in the recipes, but the essence remains the same: latte is a coffee with milk. The main difference between this drink and cappuccino is that when the latte is brewed, the espresso is added to the milk, and not vice versa. If you are interested in the proportions in which espresso is mixed with milk and milk foam, ask the barista: many coffee makers have their own opinion on this matter. Just do not forget to pronounce the name of the drink correctly: the stress in the word "latte" falls on the first syllable.
Raf coffee
A drink consisting of espresso, cream (not whipped, but liquid) and vanilla sugar. In addition to the classic vanilla flavor, coffee shops can offer citrus, lavender or, for example, berry.
Flat white
Flat white is prepared in the same way as cappuccino. The difference lies in the level of milk foam, which, when preparing this coffee drink, is strictly 0.2 cm.
Moccachino (mocha)
A type of latte that includes an additional ingredient - chocolate (in the form of cocoa powder, syrup or hot chocolate).
Macchiato
Macchiato - espresso with a circle of milk froth. The milk does not pour in, the froth is carefully laid out with a spoon to form a white circle with a brown espresso border.
Cortado
A milk and coffee drink with a 1: 1 ratio of espresso and milk.
Piccolo
A miniature version of a cappuccino. To make a piccolo, you need to make an espresso, beat it and add milk to it.
Con panna
Espresso or doppio with a cap of whipped cream.
Glace (affogato)
Ice cream coffee. Glace and affogato may differ slightly in the preparation method: for affogato, espresso is used with which ice cream is poured, and the glace recipe is not so strict in terms of choosing a coffee base and the procedure for adding ingredients to a drink.
Viennese coffee
The recipes may vary slightly, but the basic principle is the same: Viennese coffee is coffee and whipped cream.
American style coffee (filter coffee)
A beverage made by simply pouring water over coffee (as opposed to an Americano, where water is simply added to the beverage). Prepared in a drip coffee machine.
Cocoa coffee
The ingredients and preparation method are clear from the name of the drink. The proportions may vary.
Turkish coffee
This type of coffee is brewed in a Turk. Many people prefer this particular brewing method, refusing drinks prepared with a coffee machine.
Irish coffee
Coffee, cream, brown sugar, and Irish whiskey.
Coffee with cognac
Not the most popular, but still found in the coffee shop menu. Cinnamon, cloves, or orange zest are often added to an alcoholic cocktail.
Baileys coffee
Another version of a coffee drink with the addition of Irish cream liqueur.
Cold coffee drinks
Frappé
Frappe coffee is prepared using a shaker or mixer using one or two servings of espresso, sugar and a little water, which are whipped until frothy. The drink is served in a glass glass with the addition of cold water, ice and milk.
Ice latte
The methods for making ice lattes can vary. One popular recipe involves mixing cold milk, syrup, and crushed ice and then adding espresso to the resulting mixture.
Thai coffee (Vietnamese coffee)
A cold coffee and milk drink is prepared as follows: condensed milk and coffee are added to a glass with ice, after which milk or whipped cream is poured. However, adding the last two ingredients is optional.
Cold Bru
A coffee drink that is prepared by dripping cold water through a layer of coffee or by steeping ground coffee for a long time in non-hot water. However, cooking methods may differ: some brew cold brus hot, and then cool them sharply.
Nitro coffee
Nitro coffee is not so much a type of coffee drink as a way of making it, thanks to which the coffee is carbonated. Typically, nitro coffee is a carbonated version of cold brew.
Espresso tonic
Refreshing coffee drink made with espresso and tonic. Lemon, cold water and various syrups are also often added.
Alternative ways to brew coffee
Purover
Purover is a brewing method in which hot water passes through ground coffee in a special funnel with a paper filter. In this case, the strength of the drink can be adjusted by reducing or increasing the amount of ground coffee used. This method is also called Hario or V60 (Hario V60 is a device for brewing coffee with a pour-over method).
French press
French press - the name of the coffee brewing device, as well as the very method of making coffee by the method of infusion and squeezing. It is believed that a French press allows you to reveal the real taste and aroma of fine coffees.
Clever and Bonavita
Brewing in such funnels is similar to the "pour-over" method, but instead of the usual Hario V60, other devices are used. After brewing coffee, the bottom valve of the funnel opens, the coffee is drained through the filter into the cup and no longer comes into contact with water. The taste of the drink is cleaner, less dusty.
Kalita
The flat bottom with three holes at the funnel allows for more even extraction. Due to the holes, the water is slightly retained in the funnel and additionally brews coffee, which contributes to the richness of the taste.
Aeropress
Aeropress is called "home espresso" for the principle of operation, which is similar to the preparation of espresso in a coffee machine. The drink prepared in an aeropress turns out to be a little cloudy, and the taste is rich and dense.
Siphon
Hot water in the siphon flows through the coffee under pressure. The drink prepared in this way turns out to be visually clean and tea-like, but at the same time retains all the nuances of taste and aroma inherent in it.
Chemex
Making a coffee drink in a Kemex allows acidic coffees to open up. At the same time, the sweetness is emphasized and the excessive bitterness of the drink is smoothed out.
