Why Kendrick Lamar's Pulitzer Prize Is Important

First, the Pulitzer Prize is one of the most prestigious cultural awards. It is important in itself, its results are on the agenda and reflect some of the processes taking place in society. And if we might not be so interested in presenting awards for investigative journalism about the harassment of Harvey Weinstein and the forest fires in Santa Rosa, then with music it is different.

Secondly, receiving the Pulitzer Prize for a rapper is an unprecedented event. For 75 years of the existence of the music nomination, only academic and jazz musicians have won it. If you look at the list of laureates, you probably won't even find familiar names there.

Of course, Lamar received the award for more than just musical ability. An important role was played by both the acutely social lyrics in the tracks and the racial identity of the artist. But this in no way makes the award undeserved: there are very few such technical, progressive and truly musical hip-hop artists.

To Pimp a Butterfly (2015)

Much the same effect, but two years earlier, had produced this Kendrick album. This is a release with deep lyrics, cool video works, several hits and the influence of a bunch of original "black" styles, which makes it impossible to call To Pimp a Butterfly just hip-hop.

Good Kid, M. A. A. D City (2012)

This album is the story of 17-year-old Kendrick Lamar, still unknown and engaged in various kinds of criminal activities. All this is presented in the form of a whole work. Something similar (and even with the borrowing of some chips) was demonstrated by Oxxxymiron in his "Gorgorod", released in 2015.
