"Game of Thrones": how the main series of the generation ended
"Game of Thrones": how the main series of the generation ended

We have been waiting for this for eight years, and finally "Game of Thrones" got to the denouement. The war that began in Westeros after the death of Aerys Targaryen has pitted many figures and factions in the struggle for the throne. With each series, less and less survived.

Not everyone likes the final season of the series - viewership ratings are falling, and the two penultimate episodes were recognized as the worst in the history of the saga. Fans even launched a petition demanding a reshoot of the eighth season. To date, it has already been signed by 1, 1 million people.

This season of Game of Thrones is worse than when my parents got divorced.

Many believe that logic began to suffer when the books ran out and George Martin left everything to the writers. However, before filming, Martin discussed the key points of his ending with the crew. According to him, the finale of the series will not diverge so much from the book one - major differences are associated only with some minor characters who are still alive in the cycle of novels.

So, let's see how the epic ended and what the audience's assumptions came true.

What the audience was waiting for

Another trial of Tyrion

In the fifth episode, Tyrion Lannister freed his brother Jaime, who was a prisoner of Daenerys, and prepared for them and Cersei to escape. And this was after the Mother of Dragons had sternly warned him that she would not tolerate further blunders of her right hand! Considering that power ambitions led her to the desire to sow fear among her subjects, treason in wartime is unlikely to get away with Tyrion. Many suggested that he would be tried and maybe even executed.

Arya kills

Arya Stark still has the ability to change faces, which seems to have been forgotten for a while. However, after the girl solemnly dashed off on a white horse in the finale of the last episode, many fans started talking about the fact that now she might kill Daenerys.

They recalled the prophecy that the youngest of the Starks would have to close their brown, blue and green eyes forever. And if Walder Frey had brown eyes, and the Night King had blue eyes, then the green ones belong not only to Cersei, but also to the Mother of Dragons. In the book, she, like many descendants of the Valyrians, they were purple, but Daenerys performed by Emilia Clarke is just green-eyed.

However, considering how important mission Arya has already completed, having dealt with the King of the Night, it was believed that entrusting her with the elimination of the second "boss" would be overkill.

Doom Daenerys

After setting up a fire and massacre in King's Landing, Daenerys actually signed her own verdict. When news of these events spreads, no one in Westeros will want to see her on the Iron Throne. Before his death, Varys seems to have managed to send letters to the Lords of the Seven Kingdoms that John has more rights to the throne.

From the announcement of the sixth episode, it became clear that Daenerys, apparently, established a military dictatorship - in the video you could see how she receives the parade in the best traditions of authoritarian leaders. The image of the queen has finally ceased to be light.

Recall that Jaime Lannister killed Danny's father when it turned out that the Mad King is dangerous for his own subjects. So the only question was how exactly the Mother of Dragons would die: at the hands of Arya or, perhaps, John? Considering that Ygritte, John's former lover, died in his arms and partly through his fault, this would be a logical and rather tragic ending. You still don't know anything, Jon Snow.

Coronations

In this episode, it was finally necessary to decide who would sit on the Iron Throne - if at all, of course, he remained intact in the ruins of the Red Castle. Everything hinted that John should take the throne, that is, Aegon Targaryen. However, if he really had to see Daenerys die, it could be too much of a trauma for the hero. After all, John is not well suited to rule, and he himself does not want to.

Some viewers speculated that the Iron Throne would melt in dragon fire. This would be very symbolic, given that the turmoil in Westeros began with a fire ignited by the Mad King.

What Happened in Episode 6 of Season 8

Tyrion said goodbye to his family

The episode begins with the viewer following on the heels of the Imp: the hero sees a destroyed city, murdered children and burned survivors. The last Lannister walks through the ruins of the royal castle, descends into an underground corridor and discovers Jaime's golden hand under a pile of ruins. Stone by stone, the hero digs out the bodies of his brother and sister, who embraced for the last time. The Lannisters were famous for being ready to betray everything for the sake of the family, but even betrayal did not help Tyrion save those he loved.

Mother of Dragons decided to conquer the whole world

During the parade on the ashes, which took place under the huge red and black Targaryen banner, Daenerys announced that she intended to free all the people of the world in the same way as she “liberated” the inhabitants of King's Landing. She noted that the Khalassar and the Unsullied had accomplished what was once promised - slaying enemies in iron armor and destroying their stone houses - but it was too early to stop. She also bestowed the title of Master of War on the Gray Worm. At the sight of all this, Tyrion resigned as a right hand, threw the badge on the steps of the castle and went to prison.

John killed Daenerys

Jon Snow, as stubborn as Ned Stark, had illusions for a long time and continued to consider Daenerys as his queen even after what she did. However, after a conversation with Tyrion, convicted of treason (he makes the best speeches while sitting in prison), John realized that something had to be done with the mad queen.

After a difficult conversation, during which Danny persisted in sowing fire and blood, John called her queen one last time and thrust a dagger into her chest. Thus, he not only killed his beloved, almost literally repeating the plot with Ygritte, but also became a new regicide.

The iron throne was destroyed

Drogon uttered the terrible cry of a child who had lost its mother. After that, the monster melted with its fire the Iron Throne, which was once forged from a thousand swords of the defeated enemies of Aegon the Conqueror, and flew away somewhere to the east. The main symbol of the power of the Seven Kingdoms has turned into a heap of metal.

Bran Stark became king

After committing the murder, John was taken into custody for his crime. The most influential people of Westeros have gathered to choose a king who will decide his fate. Edmure Tully tried to offer his candidacy, but failed. Considering that it was his wedding that became Red, and in the third season Edmure spoiled the dramatic moment, unsuccessfully trying to hit his father's funeral boat with a burning arrow, he claims to be one of the main losers of the series.

Sam spoke out in favor of democracy, but was ridiculed - for this Westeros is not yet ready. Then Tyrion made a speech in favor of a system in which the ruler would be chosen by lords and ladies. And quite unexpectedly, Brandon Stark was elected king. Bran does not refuse, explaining this by the fact that it was not in vain that he made his way, and becomes the ruler of the Six Kingdoms.

Why six? Sansa demanded the independence of the North and became its queen: now Winterfell will not depend on anyone.

New Small Council Gathered

saving the world team:

Bran appointed Tyrion as his right hand. Thus, the last Lannister managed to avoid execution. The Gray Worm tried to protest, but to no avail. As a result, the Gray Worm departed with the impeccable for the island of Naat, the birthplace of Missandei. What happened to the khalassar remains a mystery.

In the new royal council, Sam Tarly became Chief Maester, Bronn the Blackwater Master of the Coin, Brienne of Tarth the Commander of the Guard, and Davos Seaworth the Master of Ships.

Jon Snow went to the Night Watch

Despite the fact that the Wall fell, the white walkers were defeated, and peace was made with the wildlings, the Night Watch for some reason continues to exist. Tyrion explained this by the fact that there should be a place for cripples and bastards. Apparently, it is now just a place of reference. It was there that Tyrion sent John, and he left for the North to live there among the wildlings. There he met again with Tormund and finally fondled the Phantom, fulfilling the dreams of the audience.

Arya left Westeros

Contrary to fans' expectations, Arya Stark hasn't killed anyone else. She boarded the ship and headed west of Westeros, where the maps end. There, according to the geography of Martin's world, lies the Sunset Sea. No one has yet managed to cross it and return, so nothing is known about what is beyond the sea.

Sam showed us A Song of Ice and Fire

Many associated Sam Tarly with George Martin and assumed that at the end the hero would write the chronicle of the Seven Kingdoms since the death of Robert Baratheon. Something like that happened: Sam brought the book of Archmeister Ebrose to the royal council, clarifying that he helped a little with the title. So the series paid tribute to the work with which it began.

Outcomes

Considering how high the plan was raised by the creators of the project, it was hardly possible to please everyone. The ending may seem crumpled, and the logic of the narrative and the development of the characters is grossly violated in places. This is confirmed by some actors - for example, Emilia Clarke, when asked about the quality of the last season, was considered by many to be sarcastic.

How I Met Your Mother fandom: we had the worst series finale ever!

Game of Thrones is neither the first nor the last series to have a good start, but drew a flurry of criticism in the finale. Nevertheless, it has already gone down in history, as it changed the idea of fantasy on TV, making it from a marginal genre an object of general interest. Who would have thought eight years ago that the whole world would follow the story of dragons with bated breath?

A Game of Thrones spin-off called The Long Night is in development. He will tell about the events that took place long before the War of the Five Kings, which we saw in the original series. The release date for the new project has not yet been announced. The audience's attention will inevitably be riveted to it, because "Game of Thrones" made the film adaptations of George Martin's books popular in advance. However, it is difficult to enter the same river twice, and it is unlikely that the spin-off will be able to repeat the deafening success of its predecessor series.

In the end, it was the story of the Starks.

The era is over: "Game of Thrones", we will miss.
