Why Mindhunter Season 2 Is Cool

The thing is that Fincher, who shot several episodes then, created the story in his own exceptional manner. And "Mind Hunter" turned out to be not just another action-detective story about the brave guys from the FBI catching maniacs, but a leisurely and very detailed story about the very psychology of a criminal and an attempt to understand the way of thinking of such a person.

But the new season turned out to be even more interesting. Although in this case it is difficult to say something like “He corrects the mistakes of the previous one”, since there were no mistakes as such. It's just that some viewers could stumble over Fincher's love of clarification: the series accelerated for a long time, and then most of the action was just interrogations and dialogues.

But it's safe to say that the "Mindhunter" has received an excellent development. The continuation does not change the original atmosphere at all, it just adds liveliness and drama to it.

New dynamic story

Of course, you shouldn't think that by the second season the series has turned into an action game with chases and shootings. At the heart of all the same conversations, reflections and investigations. But now the authors are relieved of the need to acquaint the audience with the heroes, and therefore the action is more energetic.

After the finale of the first season, Holden Ford began to have mental problems, but soon the hero returns to work in the behavioral department of the FBI. His partner Bill Tench is still torn between family and loyalty to duty, and Wendy Carr is trying to find herself in a new relationship.

In the very first episode, Fincher, who personally directed three episodes, gets rid of one banal line: the department is changing the leadership, and the new head is not at all against the activities of specialists, he only asks to keep everything within the law and accountability.

This allows the plot to move away from the traditional struggle with the leadership and devote more time to the detective story. And the investigations here are really interesting.

First, we are talking about the affairs of a real maniac nicknamed BTK Killer (from bind, torture, kill). He, like in the first season, is shown in the intro to each episode.

But most of the time is devoted to solving the abductions and murders of children in Atlanta. The heroes are still trying to compose a psychological portrait of the criminal, using the testimony of various maniacs in prison.

And here interrogations cease to be an end in themselves, as it was often shown in the first season. The sequel sometimes resembles the legendary "Silence of the Lambs": imprisoned criminals give the heroes clues to catch the active killers.

But beyond that, Ford and the team face many other challenges. First, the Mindhunter reminds that racism has not completely disappeared with the abolition of segregation in the United States, and the police prefer not to notice crimes in some areas.

And secondly, each of the heroes constantly has to solve personal problems.

Chemistry between characters

Despite the fact that this series is equally devoted to the entire team, at first the focus was still on Holden Ford with his revolutionary methods and unstable character.

In the second season, the main character is Bill Tench. A truly tragic story unfolds in his family, and Holt McCallany has much more opportunity to show his acting talent - he does it perfectly.

Tench's personal problems seem to reflect the activities of the team itself: at a certain moment, the family has to face exactly the same interrogations and study by another public service. And Bill's attempts to be both a good family man and a professional are the most touching part of the season.

Of course, Ford's interrogations have not gone away, besides, he has an interesting new partner, who sometimes copes more successfully than a more experienced colleague.

Slightly falls out of the general dynamics of Wendy - her line now seems not so important, although Anna Torv perfectly plays a lost person who cannot decide what he wants from life. But this character cannot be called superfluous.

Because it is in the new season that real chemistry is felt between the characters. It is pleasant to watch the communication of the main trinity and their colleagues. These are the very jokes and sometimes violent arguments that will seem familiar to anyone who worked in a friendly team. And at the same time, everyone wants to help each other, realizing that everyone has their own skeletons in the closet.

And sometimes "Mindhunter" from a gripping series about the psychology of maniacs turns into a real drama.

This liveliness was sometimes lacking in the first season, and it is she who, together with a well-defined detective line, makes the sequel easier and more understandable.

"Star" maniacs

Even before the release, all trailers and promotional materials promised viewers an important bonus to an interesting plot - the appearance of Charles Manson. This controversial criminal is on everyone's lips again.

Partly in connection with the grim anniversary: 50 years ago, on the night of August 8-9, Manson's followers killed Sharon Tate and several others. And to some extent because of his appearance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Interestingly, in "The Mindhunter" and in Tarantino, the role was played by the same actor Damon Herriman, who really looks a lot like the famous criminal.

Manson is mentioned immediately in the first episode, and for the most picky viewers there will be a logical argument between the heroes: Charles can hardly be called a maniac in the usual sense, since he himself did not kill.

The full appearance of the legend will have to wait until the middle of the season. But it certainly doesn't disappoint.

Manson in the series is served almost like a star guest. The maniac is given a ten-minute solo exit.

In addition, his follower Tex Watson is shown, as well as other famous killers. Among them are the famous Son of Sam, assistant to Dean Corll, nicknamed Candyman and familiar from the first season, Edmund Kemper.

The authors tried to show each of them as close as possible to real prototypes. And if someone wants to study the biographies of criminals in more detail after watching The Mind Hunter, they will certainly be surprised at the similarity.

The mixture of fiction and documentary facts makes the series very believable. At some point, it begins to seem that the main characters are as real as the victims and their relatives. And therefore I want to sincerely worry about both those and others.

The first season of "Mindhunter" led to doubts about the very idea of normality: even positive characters had serious problems with behavior, and the reasoning of maniacs sometimes seemed very logical.

The sequel also covers a more complex topic: the impact of each act on the family and friends of the murderer, victim or detective. Here are the mothers of the missing children, who for the rest are only part of the statistics, and the inability of the heroes to understand themselves. And the very infallibility of the justice machine, even led by dedicated professionals, is questionable.

Despite the fact that David Fincher himself directed only the first three episodes, and then other directors (also very experienced) worked, the whole season looks like a whole film for nine hours. The stylistics, color scheme, long dialogues captured by an almost still camera, as well as attention to detail and tremendous emotionality - all this reminds of the best works of Fincher.

And therefore the second season is very easy to watch, even voraciously for one or two days. Indeed, in spite of the branded "viscousness" he does not get bored, but more and more captures with each episode.
