Live Photos is a new photo format that can hardly be called photos. Rather, these are GIFs or short videos, and something similar you could see in HTC smartphones. There this technology was called HTC Zoe.
Apple emphasizes that these are still photographs, but they include 1.5 seconds of additional video footage before and after the actual shooting.
These animations can be viewed with a strong press, which came along with the 3D Touch interface. Live Photos can also be set as wallpaper on the lock screen. To record "live photos" in the interface of the "Camera" application there is a special button.
