IOS 9 review: what's new

Perhaps I want to say so much every time, but iOS 9 brought those changes that have been lacking for a long time. We have prepared an overview of the new "most advanced mobile system" and talked about all the innovations.

System design

The first thing you immediately notice after the update is the font. San Francisco became the system font instead of Helvetica. This applies not only to iOS, but also to OS X. Changing the font is due to the fact that "San Francisco" reads much better, even with a small size. Of course, the font supports Cyrillic.

The Spotlight screen has also changed. Now there is a full-fledged search engine that not only makes a search by request, but also shows selected contacts, news, can convert values and display events from the calendar. Some functions related to geolocation do not work in Russia and Ukraine.

It is noteworthy that there are two ways to go to the search screen. The first is to swipe from top to bottom on the desktop as before. The second is to scroll through the desktops all the way to the left. If you need to find something, then it is better to use the first method, as it includes the keyboard and saves one click on the screen.

The "Notification Center" now has the ability to sort information by time. This made it an order of magnitude more useful. Now, scrolling through the notifications, you can see which ones came last. However, you can return to the usual view in the settings.

The multitasking panel has also changed. The apps now look like a stack of cards, with suggestions at the bottom. There are three applications on the screen at the same time, and you can still close them two or three at a time.

The settings have got a search. As the system becomes more and more functional with each version of iOS, searching through the settings is a useful innovation that will be useful for novice users. And experienced too. It's amazing where this or that toggle switch is sometimes located.

There are also new standard wallpapers that we talked about. Several satellite views, macro shots of feathers and planets. Almost all of them are photographed against a dark background.

Functions

The functionality of the system has also changed. Moreover, in contrast to, it is quite noticeable. Power saving mode has appeared. You can either enable it from the settings manually, or use a notification - when the battery is low, the system itself will recommend enabling the mode. When this mode is enabled, animations, email checking, background program updates and automatic downloads are removed. Based on the Geekbench benchmarks, the system is also slowing down.

In addition to the four-digit and alphanumeric password, now create a six-digit password. The number of combinations with four digits was already considerable. With six, the likelihood of cracking a password is close to zero. Especially if automatic erasure of information is enabled after several incorrect attempts.

Apple Apps

Music

It is worth noting the visual changes in the application itself. All system menus have changed, now they look more neat.

The interface has become simpler. The cover art of the song being played takes up half of the playback screen. On the bottom half are the play buttons. Since the service works on recommendations, it is possible to put likes. And not only in the application, but also in the control center and on the lock screen.

Notes

is an aggregator of news and articles. It works with articles in English only and is not available in Russia. You can work around the restriction by changing the region of residence to the United States. News has a nice layout, and content creators will be able to add ads to articles in the future. In terms of functionality, News is an absolute copy of Flipboard and Feedly.

iCloud Drive

The lack of a separate iCloud Drive app for iOS has taken many users by surprise. It was inconvenient to use cloud storage without the ability to properly view everything that is stored in it. Now the application is there, and it acts as a file manager for everything stored in the cloud. The app can be disabled in the iCloud settings.

Photo

There are two more albums in "Photo". One of them stores captured selfies, the other contains screenshots. When viewing photos, a slider appears at the bottom, a swipe on which allows you to navigate through the photos taken earlier and later. To hide the photo, just open the menu - holding your finger is no longer necessary.

iPad

Despite the large number of changes in iOS 9 in general, there are also a number of iPad-only changes.

For example, the Split Screen function, which divides the screen into two parts, allowing you to work with several applications at the same time. However, it only supports iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4. Slide Over function allows you to swipe from the edge of the screen and open the panel with important applications. From there, you can quickly reply to a message or write something.

The ability to watch videos in a small window was previously only available in the YouTube app. It is now available throughout the system. The playback window can be moved and resized. At the same time, you can work with other applications.

Finally, the iPad keyboard can be used as a trackpad. Moving your finger on it, you move the cursor. A similar feature is available on the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus with support.
