Five ways to make the perfect dish with any toppings.
What to consider
- Frozen and freshly made dumplings are prepared in the same way. You do not need to defrost them, otherwise the dough will soften and stick together.
- The time and technology of preparation does not depend on the type of filling. All dumplings are cooked the same way.
- If there are a lot of dumplings, cook them in batches so they don't stick together.
What to add to water for dumplings
The liquid must be salted, even if you are preparing dumplings with sweet filling: this will prevent them from sticking together.
For a savory dish, you will need ½ – 1 teaspoon of salt per liter of water. But you can take more. For sweet dumplings, a pinch is enough so as not to overpower the taste.
For dumplings with savory filling, add 1–2 dried bay leaves. This will make them more aromatic and even tastier. You can also add a small chopped or whole onion, some black pepper and other favorite spices, especially if you like broth dumplings.
To prevent the dumplings from sticking together, pour 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable oil into the water. Or grease an already prepared dish with vegetable or butter.
How and how much to cook dumplings on the stove
This can be done in two ways.
In water
Boil water in a wide saucepan. The liquid should completely cover the dumplings so that they float freely in it and do not stick together. Add seasoning and oil.
Place the dumplings in boiling water in portions and stir immediately to prevent them from sticking to the bottom. Reduce heat to medium to medium-high.
Cook, stirring occasionally. After a few minutes, the dumplings should float. Then cook them for another 3-5 minutes (depending on the thickness of the dough).
The main thing is not to let the dumplings creep. You can try a bite of dough to determine how well they are done. For ready-made dumplings, the dough will be soft and slightly transparent.
For a couple
Lubricate the steam nozzle with oil or butter. Place the dumplings on it in one layer so that they do not touch each other.
Boil water in a saucepan. There should be enough liquid so that the nozzle does not touch it. Place the dumplings container and cover. Cook for 5-7 minutes.
If you don't have a dedicated steaming container, simple gauze will do. Fill about a third of the pot with water. Pull the fabric tight on top.
When the water boils, place the dumplings on cheesecloth at a short distance from each other. Cover with a deep bowl and cook for 5-7 minutes.
How and how much to cook dumplings in a slow cooker
In a multicooker, as on the stove, the dish is cooked in water and steamed.
In water
Pour boiling water into the multicooker bowl, filling it about half full. Add seasoning and oil.
Throw in the dumplings. They should float freely in the water. Close the lid and cook for about 5 minutes in Steam mode or 8-10 minutes in Pasta mode.
For a couple
First grease the steaming container with butter, vegetable oil or butter. Arrange the dumplings on it in one layer so that they do not touch each other.
Pour about two glasses of water into the multicooker bowl. Place the container on top (it should not touch the liquid). Close the lid, set the “Steam cooking” mode and cook the dumplings for 15 minutes.
How and how much to cook dumplings in the microwave
Use a wide and deep microwave-safe container. Place the dumplings there in one layer. Cover them with hot water about half or a little more, but not completely. Add seasoning and oil.
Cover the dumplings with a lid or plate. Cook them at full power for a minute. Then turn on medium power and cook for about 8 minutes. After that, leave the dish in the switched off microwave for a few more minutes.
