Why everyone started talking about credit ratings

On January 31, 2019, amendments to the law on credit histories came into force. Many media outlets, speaking about innovations, have emphasized two things. They wrote that as of 2019, you can supposedly:

  1. Find out your credit rating.
  2. Get it and your credit history through "Gosuslugi".

And both of these statements are not true. The life hacker understands how things really are.

What is a credit rating

This is an assessment of your solvency, which demonstrates to the bank how much you can be trusted and with what probability you will return the loan money. It is billed based on several factors. Taken into account:

  • credit history data and its availability in principle;
  • timely repayment of loans;
  • the presence of unpaid fines, taxes, utility bills, collected through the courts;
  • the size of the salary;
  • age;
  • work experience;
  • and much more.

What's new with credit rating

In short, nothing. There is simply no single universal credit rating that would be valid in any financial institution.

Each bank has its own scoring system - calculating points according to the entered criteria. Only the financial institution knows which one. They are not disclosed, otherwise fraudsters can use this knowledge.

The credit ratings that were remembered in 2019 are those given by some BCHs. There are no uniform requirements here. The law states that the bureau can (but is not obliged) to compile a credit rating according to its own method. Accordingly, the organization itself chooses the criteria that they evaluate, and they may not even coincide with the criteria of another bureau, not to mention banks.

There are no innovations here. The 2014 law also stipulated that a rating could be included in a credit history.

If the bureau makes a credit score, it goes in addition to the credit history. How to get it, Lifehacker has already written. But the institution that stores your credit history may not have a rating, in which case you will not have one.

Is it possible to get a credit history with a rating through "Gosuslugi"

The presence of a rating in a credit history, as mentioned above, depends on the policy of the credit bureau. In any case, it is impossible to view the CI through "Gosuslugi". But registration on this site greatly facilitates the process of obtaining it.

To make your credit history available, you have to go through two stages:

  1. Find out which credit bureaus store your data.
  2. Make inquiries to all of these organizations to obtain a CI from each.

How to find out where the credit history is stored through "Gosuslugi"

On "Gosuslug" you can get information on the first stage. Open the special one and select the option "Access of individuals to the list of organizations that store credit history".

How to get a credit history using "Gosuslug"

As for the second stage, in order to get a credit history, you need to contact each CHB. Previously, for this it was necessary to come to the office in person, send a letter or telegram, an electronic request. Now you can log in to the BCI website using your account on "State Services" and get access to the information you need. Most of the 13 credit bureaus provide this opportunity.

What is the bottom line

As we can see, the excitement around the credit rating was artificially inflated: this issue was practically not affected by the changes in the legislation. Here's what to remember:

  1. You can find out the credit rating if the BKI compiles it. It will be included in the credit history. This is not an innovation, as it was in previous years.
  2. Since 2019, an electronic credit history can be obtained free of charge twice a year in each CRI.
  3. The list of bureaus that store data on your borrower's potential is available on "State Services".
  4. It is impossible to get a credit history through "State Services", but using an account on this portal, you can log in to the sites of most BCHs and get a CI.
  5. The credit rating that bureaus compose is based on their own criteria and information they know. The bank will evaluate you differently. Therefore, according to the rating from the BKI, it is impossible to say unequivocally whether they will give you a loan or not - you can only assume. It will be much more efficient to carefully study the credit history - Lifehacker wrote how to do this.
