In this review, you will find several sites that will help you learn a lot about our world, and look at the existing knowledge from the other side. Also, don't forget to show this article to your student children.
Atlases and contour maps have been used for educational purposes for a long time and are an excellent way to study various processes, phenomena and events in relation to geographic location. The only problem is that, despite all the achievements of the digital age, these textbooks still remain in the same paper-and-pencil form as decades ago. In this review, we have put together a few examples for you to show how the cards should actually look.
Natural phenomena
This wonderful interactive map made me really excited. It dynamically shows the movement of air masses, temperature, pressure, cloudiness and humidity. You can switch between these layers using the menu in the lower right corner. Notice the elevation menu next to it, which allows you to view the data in different layers of the atmosphere. And below you will find a timeline with which you can find out the weather forecast for several days in advance.
Peoples, states, geographical discoveries
Geacron is a fundamental project to map human history. You can select any year over the past several thousand years and view the settlement of peoples, the boundaries of existing states, major campaigns, conquests, expeditions. You can navigate the time scale step by step, year by year, or you can indicate the dates of interest on the bottom panel and view changes on the map in dynamics. In addition to the web version, the site also has applications for Android and iOS.
Population migration
The next site will take us from studying the great migrations of peoples of past centuries to modern realities. Here you can see the main flows of population migration on a convenient interactive diagram. Data are presented for the period from 1990 to 2010.
World statistics
And for a snack, I have prepared a website for you, which is just a storehouse of various statistical information, designed in the form of maps, diagrams and graphs. Here you can see the countries with the highest literacy rates, compare the economic performance of different regions, see the places with the highest crime rates, and much, much more. Moreover, all this data is presented in an interactive form, with links to the map and time.
I am sure that very soon the atlases and contour maps we are used to, which students diligently paint with colored pencils, will become a thing of the past, and such interactive projects will replace them. Would you like to study with such cards?
