The principle of operation is simple: you register with Uptime using a Google account, find a video on YouTube and find out who else is watching this video at the same time as you. Whether it's your friend or a casual user. You can invite and share videos, add reactions like on Facebook, and live comments like on SoundCloud (the comment will appear on top of the video, and not remain somewhere in the block below it). You can also follow other users to know which YouTube videos they are interested in.

The Uptime app is currently only available in the US and only for iOS (it is not available in the Russian App Store). There are no guarantees that Uptime will become a long-term project and will develop, and there are no plans to develop an application for Android devices. But the idea is good. For example, with Uptime, you can set up online cinemas from different parts of the city, country, planet. Or keep track of what videos popular bloggers or, say, politicians are watching.

Interestingly, there are no similar features on YouTube itself yet, but Uptime is a great initiative to stir up the video service and make it more interactive.

Uptime was the first project within Area 120, a startup incubator developed by Google employees according to the "20% of the time" rule. This is a Google initiative, according to which a company employee can devote 20% of his time to developing his own projects. It is from the "20% rule" that giants such as Gmail and Google Cardboard's cardboard VR glasses have grown.
