Android O Developer Preview can be installed on Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Google Pixel, Pixel XL, and Pixel C.

The new operating system will differ from its predecessors in several ways:

  1. Battery efficiency is expected to be a key update in Android O. Among other things, the user will be able to control processes in the background, preventing programs from performing hidden tasks. This will reduce battery consumption and extend the battery life of the devices.
  2. The alerts are grouped by category. The user will be able to choose which notifications he wants to receive, and without which he will do.
  3. Google is going to improve the sound quality transmitted to Bluetooth headphones using new codecs (including Sony LDAC).
  4. Developers will be able to make responsive application icons that will adjust their appearance to the color theme or smartphone screensaver.
  5. An option will appear to select an application to store the user's personal data. So it will be possible to automatically fill in the fields when registering on the sites.
  6. Android O will have a Picture-in-Picture mode. Now you don't have to interrupt watching the movie if you need to urgently open the messenger. The video will play in a small window over the screen with chat or any other application.
  7. Helpful innovations for developers: support for WebView, Java 8 API, java.time API and much more.

Apart from the mobile devices mentioned above, Android O for developers exists on desktops. Previews on a PC can be run through emulators.

For the second year in a row, Google gives developers access to a test version of the operating system in March. The rest of the users will receive Android O this fall. The O in the name traditionally means sweetness. We'll find out which one later (one of the popular options is Oreo).

Recall that Google gives the versions of the Android operating system sweet names: L - Lollipop, M - Marshmallow. The current version of Android 7.0 is sweet too. N is Nougat.
