"Quiet Place - 2" - a story about family ties in a horror wrapper

On June 3, the horror thriller "Quiet Place - 2" is released on Russian screens - the continuation of the box office hit of 2018. The first film immersed viewers in an alternative world, which was captured by blind alien monsters. Thanks to their incredibly sensitive hearing, these nightmarish creatures killed anyone who made even the slightest sound.

The picture combined the author's intimacy and intense plot, so it was highly appreciated and loved by both critics and ordinary viewers. The original seemed to be so self-contained that it didn't need a sequel. But the sequel didn't ruin anything. In addition, it became clear that the first picture of the dilogy was not an accidental luck, but a consequence of the enormous talent of screenwriter and director John Krasinski.

The plot begins from the very moment where the audience parted with the characters the last time. The Abbot family, having lost their beloved husband and father Lee (John Krasinski) in a fight with monsters, flees. Wandering around, they find an abandoned factory, where they meet an old acquaintance - Emmett (Cillian Murphy). His whole family died, and with it his hope, and now the hero lives as a hermit.

Meanwhile, the eldest daughter Regan (Millie Simmonds) finds out that there are still survivors nearby. In addition, she understands how to apply ultrasound to lime the remaining monsters. But for this you need to get to a remote island, in which Emmett will help the girl - at first reluctantly, and then with all possible dedication.

Amazing work with sound and silence

Many viewers joked that more words were spoken in the trailer for the sequel than in the entire previous film. This is really so: in "Quiet Place - 2" dialogues have increased, but all of them are justified by the plot. For example, the heroes have the opportunity to talk to each other in a safe bunker. However, this does not mean that the monsters have become harmless. On the contrary, the creatures have even grown wiser in comparison with the first part, so the characters still have to be extremely careful.

Despite the fact that the heroes, as before, are laconic, there are enough sounds in the picture, and they are very expressive. This also applies to household noises, and the surrounding nature, and the factory where the Abbots find refuge. Therefore, "A Quiet Place - 2" is still a film where even the rustle of bare feet walking on leaves can be intense.

But best of all, the creators succeeded in the sound design of the monsters. These creatures make sounds that look like crackling or chirping of grasshoppers, and when attacked, they scream heart-rendingly. Which creates a truly unearthly, inhuman image.

Detailed monsters and intense plot

In general, in the second film, viewers will learn much more about the monsters that attacked the Earth. They are no longer hidden, as in the first part, where they appeared only in the dark and without details. Here, the creatures will be shown in all their monstrous glory.

The creators admit that this time they had enough time to study the creatures. Therefore, they were able to better think over their disgusting anatomy and demonstrate how monsters behave in different conditions: in daylight, in water and in open spaces. And this is no less frightening than the footage shot in complete darkness.

True, the origin of the creatures was never explained (perhaps this secret was left for disclosure in the triquel). They just showed a flashback with a meteor shower, which brought mysterious monsters to Earth. But, as before, the creatures frighten with their ruthlessness and deal with the victims in the blink of an eye. And this fact will definitely not let the audience relax.

In continuation, the degree of tension increased even more, and the heroes are thrown from one dangerous situation to another. In addition, the chances of dying have increased. Now the Abbots are also responsible for the baby, which at any moment can attract the attention of monsters by crying or suffocate from lack of air. In general, we will have to worry about the characters, especially since the authors are doing everything to make them dear to us.

Several storylines develop at once in the film. And the inextricable connection between the characters is emphasized by parallel editing, adding even more tension to what is happening on the screen.

Family values and the vibe of "The One of Us"

Even in the first part, the Abbots appeared to be an extremely close-knit family. The second picture develops this theme further. Moreover, the connection between family members is not spoken, but shown. So, in the scenes about how the heroes lived before the attack of the monsters, it is clear that relatives understand each other literally from a half-word. Consequently, not only knowledge of sign language, but also love helps them to survive in unbearable conditions.

In contrast to the Abbots, the character of Cillian Murphy is not familiar with body language, and the death of loved ones mutilated his soul. Having lost his entire family, with the help of dumb Regan, he learns to love again. And their relationship looks incredibly touching, because Emmett, in a sense, has to replace the girl's dad.

All this painfully resembles Neil Druckmann's game universe "The Last of Us". There, heroes who were originally strangers to each other in the post-apocalypse also traveled through the remnants of human civilization. And closer to the finale, one in the person of his partner found a daughter, and the other - a father.

Perhaps the only thing in which "Quiet Place - 2" deceives the expectations of the audience is advertising materials for the film. After reading the synopsis, we can conclude that in the new picture, the real danger comes not from monsters, but from people. This is not entirely true, since there will only be one such scene in the tape. But against the background of the brilliant acting and excellent directing, you simply do not pay attention to such trifles.

The sequel went beyond the walls of the only house, ceased to be intimate and in this it is not like its predecessor. There is more action, so this is more of a survival thriller than a horror movie. But all these changes even went to the benefit of the tape. She does not look back at the first part, but goes on, and so successfully that now rumors about the upcoming triquel - "Quiet Place - 3" - no longer frighten, but delight.
