Weekend Project: How to Boost Your Router's Wi-Fi Signal Using a Tin Can

Many of you have seen a great tutorial on how to make a beer can router wi-fi amplifier. We decided to give it a try and see how much this thing really enhances it.

First you need to make this reflector. All actions are described in the gallery below. There is nothing special here.

For testing, I asked my assistant to stand on the sixth floor balcony, at first, just with a router without a reflector. Then I left the house at a distance of 50 meters, and we put on a reflector. Signal strength measurements were made using the iStumbler software.

Here's what we got (all measurements took place in line of sight without the slightest interference):

1. This is a normal line-of-sight router operation from the sixth floor of an ordinary house.

2. Then I began to move away from the house, maintaining a line of sight. The position of the router was adjusted so that I was in the plane perpendicular to the antenna.

3. The router was rejected to mount the reflector we made.

4. Measurement continued with the reflector pointed at me.

It is noticeable that the signal increased somewhat, but became very unstable and the curve began to jump.

In general, the reflector works and the signal level indicator really added + 20% at a great distance, having received an unstable profile. You can fully recommend such upgrades for country routers if you want to slightly enhance the signal.

Have you tried to amplify the signal of your router? What did you do for this?
