Design

In terms of design, the iPhone XR combines the best of the iPhone X and iPhone 8. From the first, the novelty received a frameless screen in the entire front panel, from the second - a frame made of durable aluminum of the 7000th series and a back cover made of glass.

For the abundance of available colors, the smartphone can also be called the ideological follower of the iPhone 5C. This is the second time in the history of Apple to offer such a vast array of vibrant colors. iPhone XR will be available in classic white and black, as well as blue, yellow, coral and even red (PRODUCT) RED, which usually appears no earlier than six months after the official announcement.

In terms of size, the iPhone XR is the sweet spot between the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max. It is larger than the former, but not as huge as the flagship with a 6.5-inch screen. Like all modern iPhones, the XR has an IP67 rating, which means it can withstand a 30-minute submersion in 1m of water.

With new backlight technology and precision-cut glass, Apple has been able to perfectly match the curves of the case and minimal bezels around the display - it occupies about 80% of the entire surface of the front bezel.

The smartphone uses Liquid Retina, and Apple calls it the best LCD display ever on an iPhone. With a diagonal of 6.1 inches and a resolution of 1,792 × 828 pixels, it has a density of 326 ppi. Thanks to True Tone support, the picture on the screen always looks natural.

To reduce the cost of the iPhone XR, the company removed support for 3D Touch gestures, but instead now uses a new tactile touch feature that also allows you to instantly select desktop photo modes and use quick actions in other applications.

Unlike the iPhone XS and XS Max, the iPhone XR has only 3GB of RAM, but it is equipped with the same A12 Bionic processor, which is currently the most powerful and energy efficient.

The newest chip operates at a frequency of 2.49 GHz and, in addition to six processor cores, has a quad-core video accelerator, which is 50% faster than the previous generation. All this works in conjunction with the improved Neural Engine, which supports machine learning.

Apple does not name the exact battery capacity of the iPhone XR, but claims it lasts 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 8 Plus. And this, in turn, makes the iPhone XR the most tenacious of the entire line of smartphones. The affordable flagship supports wireless charging, and with an 8-watt adapter, it can be charged to half in just 30 minutes.

Despite the single camera module, the iPhone XR is capable of taking the same cool pictures as the older models. The smartphone supports portrait mode with studio lighting effects and a new "Depth" function that allows you to adjust the depth of field not only during shooting, but also after.

Like last year's iPhone X, the new iPhone XR features a 7MP TrueDepth camera with depth sensing technology. With faster Secure Enclave and software optimizations, Face ID on iPhone XR is much faster.

Speakers and microphones

The iPhone XR boasts stereo sound just like the older models. This year, Apple has equipped all of its smartphones with stereo speakers, adding to the standard speaker at the bottom another one located next to the front-facing camera.

Unlike the iPhone XS and XS Max, the affordable flagship has only three microphones: a polyphonic speaker and one next to each camera. At the same time, the iPhone XR can record video with stereo sound.

Ports and wireless interfaces

Like all modern iPhones, there is only one connector left on the body of the novelty - Lightning. It serves to connect a charger and a branded wired headset. To connect other headphones, you will have to use Bluetooth or an adapter from Lightning to 3.5 mm audio jack. The latter, by the way, is no longer included in the kit.

The iPhone XR's wireless communications feature 802.11ac Wi-Fi with 2 × 2 MIMO technology, Bluetooth and NFC with reader support. Also, the smartphone provides a higher data transfer rate over the cellular network due to the 4G LTE Advanced module.

Storage volume

iPhone XR will be presented in three versions. The starter module will receive 64 GB, while you can also choose the version with 128 and 256 GB. The current maximum storage capacity of 512GB is only available on the iPhone XS and XS Max.

The company made such a decision, most likely, in order not to spoil the sales of the iPhone XS and XS Max.
