IOS 10, macOS Sierra and other WWDC 2016 results

Apple has finished its two-hour opening presentation for WWDC 2016. We've gathered all of the announcements in one place.

watchOS 3

Apple began its presentation by talking about the new version of watchOS. According to Kevin Lynch, watchOS 3 will bring many features and improvements to users that have been lacking. Apps will open and load several times faster. The programs themselves will be able to update data in the background: this innovation for iOS was presented back in 2013. Now it is not necessary to keep the application with the training open: it will continue to collect data in its minimized form.

The interface has also changed. You can switch between applications on a new screen that opens with a long press. It resembles its iOS version.

The Control Center has also migrated from iOS to watchOS, which means that managing the watch will become even more convenient.

Another major update: Scribble handwritten notes. The operating system has learned to recognize handwriting input of letters in two languages: English and Chinese. It is not yet known when Russian will be supported.

Apple has also added several new watch faces, including a Minnie Mouse watch face and an Activity watch face that tracks your physical activity.

By the way, Activity has also changed: now the application is adapted for people in wheelchairs. You can compare your accomplishments to those of your Apple Watch friends.

WatchOS 3 introduces the Breathe app, which invites you to rest and breathe deeply. During breathing practices, the program will count the pulse.

The update will be available to users in the fall.

tvOS

tvOS hasn't received big changes, but among the announced ones it is worth noting the new Remote application for controlling the set-top box on mobile devices, wiser Siri with support for YouTube search and automatic downloading of compatible programs from iPhone to Apple TV.

macOS 10.12 Sierra

Yes, Apple has renamed OS X to macOS. Like tvOS, macOS hasn't received major updates, but new features will make the operating system more convenient.

Apple has worked to make macOS, iOS and watchOS devices work together. If you have an Apple Watch, then you no longer have to unlock your Mac: the system will automatically recognize smartwatches nearby.

MacOS and iOS devices now have a shared clipboard. You can copy text, pictures, and even slides from presentations from Mac to iPhone or iPad and vice versa.

Several new features have been added to iCloud. For example, the service has learned to automatically upload old files from Mac storage to the cloud to save space. Thus, macOS Sierra itself will "clean the system". We've also improved file sync across multiple devices, allowing you to view files from your Mac desktop right on your iPhone.

The voice assistant Siri appeared in macOS. It works with the capabilities of the desktop operating system. For example, search results can be brought directly to the notification center. If you have searched for pictures on the Internet, you can simply drag them from the notification center into the document.

Small innovations: multi-window mode now works in all programs, video can be viewed in picture-in-picture mode, like on iPad with iOS 9.

The public beta version of macOS Sierra will be released in July, the final one in the fall.

iOS 10

The main star of the evening, as expected, was iOS 10. Apple has added many features to the mobile OS.

Redesigned lock screen and notification cards. With 3D Touch, you can perform various actions with notifications. For example, if a letter has arrived, you can quickly delete it, reply, or postpone it for later.

The use of 3D Touch on the home screen will also expand: the technology will allow previewing application information.

Siri has become smarter and learned to work with third-party applications such as instant messengers, Internet telephony, and taxi services. Now you can order a taxi with Uber just like this: “Hey Siri! Book me a car with Uber. It is not yet clear how soon the developers will adapt their programs for the Russian Siri.

Improved QuickType keyboard. Now it not only suggests relevant words, but also allows you to quickly fill in fields with contact information, send location data. But again, it is not known whether the Russian language will be supported.

A lot of new things have appeared in the "Photos" application. The program learned to recognize faces, improved the screen with places. An interesting innovation is Memories. These are photo stories that the program creates automatically based on the date and location of the photo. Each such story is accompanied by a clip of photos and videos. The video can be edited, the musical theme and duration can be changed.

The promised redesign was received by the Apple Music music service. All sections were redesigned, the Connect tab, which few people used, disappeared. The updated version of the service will be available not only on iOS 10, but also on macOS, iTunes on Windows and Android.

Messages received a major update. You can send animated photos, handwritten text, and even stickers using the dedicated iMessages app store. Emojis have become three times larger. They will be able to replace ordinary words using a button on the keyboard. Text and photos can be "encrypted": to view them, you will need to "erase" the protective layer.

Little things:

• New Home app for controlling smart home devices. It will be enough to note that you are at home, and the program itself will turn on or off certain gadgets.
• The "Maps" application has been updated. It received a new interface (including the updated navigation mode). The cards themselves have become smarter and offer to quickly calculate the time before work or home, find a place for lunch or a gas station. True, this does not work in Russia yet.
• Updated the News program. She received a new design, the ability to notify the reader about breaking news. You can also subscribe to interesting publications.
• Changes in the "Phone" application. The most interesting feature is the ability to call your contacts in WeChat, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp from the application. By the way, the contact cards have also been updated.
• In iOS 10, you can create and take notes with other users.
• Editing Live Photos.
• Split View for Safari on iPad.
• Full encryption of all data.

The public beta will be released in July and the final one in the fall. The developer version will be available today.

Swift Playgrounds

The final chord of the presentation was the announcement of the Swift Playgrounds program, which will help you learn code right on the iPad. An additional row of symbols was added to the keyboard especially for her. The app will be released in the fall and will be free.
