If you have a hard time parting with old things that are long overdue for a landfill, this advice will definitely help you. Scientists have found that it is much easier to get rid of your favorite, but already unnecessary thing if you take a picture of it.

It is much easier to cope with sentimentality and throw away everything that is stored "as a keepsake" if you keep this very memory in the form of a photo. This was confirmed by an experiment in which 797 students from Pennsylvania State University took part.

They were offered to donate some of the old, unnecessary things to charity. Some students were advised to photograph what they were giving, while others were not. As a result, the first group donated 613 items, while the second group managed to receive only 533 items.

Why are we hoarding all kinds of junk? The fact is that we do not feel sorry for the thing itself, but for the memories associated with it.

We are also reluctant to part with what is somehow related to our self-identification. That is why parents carefully keep undershirts, romper suits and other items of infant wardrobe. These things remind them of how a man and a woman stopped being just a couple and became parents.

Finally, there are items that are so iconic for us, such as a wedding dress, that even a whole album of wedding photos does not help to get rid of.

But it is one thing to know about this method, and quite another to apply it in practice. If you have a lot of useless memorabilia, turn on your smartphone camera and start cluttering your home.
