It's not easy being a workaholic. Stress, headaches, lack of energy. And even rest does little to change this situation. One small mistake is to blame. Do you do it?

All workaholics make this subtle mistake
All workaholics make this subtle mistake

Hi, I am Farid Karimov. And I'm a workaholic.

Stress, headaches, lack of energy. I've struggled with this for years.

Recreation. Sport. Proper nutrition. It helped, but not much.

I recently finally figured out my mistake. It is done by 99% of workaholics. Do you do it?

Workaholic Vasya

Take the abstract workaholic Vasya. He roams his office like a slave in a quarry. Forces are gone!

But he's smart. Smarter than nature. Now he will deceive her!

Vasya starts pumping energy, coffee, chocolate into himself, depriving himself of sleep … Plus he pumps himself up psychologically: NLP, visualization, dancing with a tambourine around a photo with a red Ferrari … Many motivational "gurus" still offer to get into debt … Well, in short, Vasya continues to bend this stick. Until it cracks and Vasya does not go … no, not to the morgue, but almost to the hospital. Neurosis, gastritis, migraine, high blood pressure. In short, a young 20-year-old guy with a hospital card that not every grandmother can boast of.

Somewhere here, as a rule, Vasya senses something amiss. He goes to Google and comes across, for example, my article on energy management.

“Yeah, I need regular rest to recuperate. Well, OK!"

Spitting, he crammed breaks, weekends, and even annual vacations into his super-busy schedule. Well, now everything will work out. Vasya will work less, but more productive.

So?

Not this way! Yes, steam comes out of this inflated kettle a little, and the worst is over. But stress, headaches, and, the strangest thing, lack of energy - everything is in place.

Well, what's wrong now?

Small but fatal mistake

Catch a workaholic when he comes back from vacation. And ask him: "What did you do?"

He will answer you something like: “I was resting. I played on the computer."

At this point, take a close look at his face. You will see how uncomfortable and ashamed he is. He clearly feels guilty about his vacation. In nine cases out of ten, he will immediately add something like: "Well, before that I worked four hours without rest" or "I have translated 100,500 characters today."

He's making excuses!

Here it is, the main mistake! A workaholic cannot rest without feeling guilty.

In the worst case, he thinks about work all the time. From time to time he pulls out his smartphone and checks his mail. Or reads the news.

At best, he doesn't remember work at all. BUT the feeling of guilt is constantly hanging somewhere in the subconscious. This feeling spoils the whole vacation. It prevents him from truly recovering.

It may be objected that …

… On vacation, work often comes with insight.

I agree, but not when you think about work. It usually lights up when you are completely relaxed and your thoughts are hovering somewhere else. And suddenly - THOUGHT! - insight. For such cases, I carry a voice recorder with me. I wrote it down and continue to rest further.

How to get rid of the feeling of guilt?

Change your attitude towards relaxation.

Rest is not a break between work. Rest is a reward for good work.

You deserve your vacation and should enjoy the reward with a light heart.

Plus "self-training" is connected. Work will become more desirable if you know that for it you will receive a "lump of sugar" - rest.

Leisure

Active rest will also help you.

If I play football and a 100-kilogram defender is running at me … I just don't have time to worry about work! I am all in the game, all in the "stream".

But the machine or my favorite walking is no longer suitable. They leave the opportunity to think about work.

Total

Only then the rest is complete when:

  1. You are out of the workplace.
  2. You don't think about work.
  3. You don't feel guilty about the rest.

This subtle third point can ruin everything.

Don't forget about it!

Or are you just Japanese?

How are you resting? Do you manage to switch completely?
