Reusing plastic items is a trendy eco-friendly trend. Usually, they suggest making bird feeders from plastic bottles or constructing figurines for decorating the garden. We have collected top tips that are interesting from a practical point of view.
1. Make a plant watering system
Most garden plants need to be watered at the roots, especially if you combine watering with fertilization. The plastic bottle can be turned into a drip irrigation system, which can be used to deliver moisture and fertilizer directly to the roots of plants for a long time. Punch a few small holes along the length of the bottle with any handy tool. Bury at the same time as planting seedlings. The water from the bottle will slowly flow to the roots. This simple tool solves the problem of dead leaves and prevents mold and mildew from growing.
This system can be used outdoors and in flower pots with a slight redesign. Cut the bottom of the bottle so that the neck buried in the ground does not reach the bottom. Fill the reservoir with water if you leave the plants without watering for a long time. From the bottle, water will slowly seep into the ground and nourish the flowers.
2. Make flower pots
Old bottles and containers will act as a mold for making homemade flower pots. Take plastic bottles of an interesting shape, cut off the top. Prepare the grout and fill the molds by about a third. Then insert another smaller plastic container inside to create a bowl. The next day, the inner inserts can be removed to make a drainage hole in the bottom (using a drill or any convenient tool). After another couple of days, you can remove the outer plastic shell.
3. Make a system for growing seedlings
It is not enough just to pour soil into the jar and stick the seeds in there. We still need to germinate them. For everything to sprout, make drainage holes in plastic cans, fill containers with soil and plant seeds. Place the cans on a pallet lined with small stones or pebbles. Cover with cling film to make a mini greenhouse. The seedling speed system is ready.
4. Make a self-irrigated seedling system
The methods of growing seedlings can be improved and made from plastic bottles a design that will save you the need for watering. Cut the bottle in half. Punch a hole in the lid. Take a thin lace 25 cm long, fold it in half, and tie a knot approximately in the middle to form a loop on one side. Pass the loose ends of the string through the hole in the lid and close it. Insert the upper part of the bottle with the lid down into the lower part. Fill with water so that the ends of the rope are immersed in it. Place soil, plant seeds, water the plants to saturate the soil with water. Ready!
5. Grow onions in a plastic bottle
Create a versatile vertical bed for fresh herbs. Cut off the throat of a large plastic bottle and punch holes in the body (not too low). Fill with soil to the first hole, cover them with bulbs inserted with roots inside the bottle. Continue backfilling with soil. Fill the entire container, place on the pallet. Remember to water and harvest fresh herbs.
6. Make a wasp trap
Finding a hornet's nest in a garden or in a suburban area can be difficult, and clouds of insects interfere with work and rest. Make traps out of unwanted bottles. Cut off the top of the bottle, place it neck down in the second part (without the cap). Pour some honey on the bottom. The wasps will be able to go down, but not get out.
7. Make another watering system
It's simple. As a child, we splashed with water, punching several holes in the bottle cap. If you make holes in the bottle itself and attach it to the hose, you get a watering can with a wide radius of action.
