Dropbox yesterday announced the complete end of support for two mobile apps: the Carousel image gallery and the minimalist Mailbox email client. Unlike the first, the latter was very popular, and now many will have to look for a replacement. Fortunately, there are alternatives.
And there is plenty of time to search. The Dropbox corporate blog says Mailbox will retire on February 26, 2016, and Carousel a month later, on March 26. And although recently both applications have rarely received updates, the decision of the company looks strange, because its plans were to release the desktop version of Mailbox, which was already at the stage of open beta testing.
There is now a stub on the official website that says “We're done”, and download links for iOS and Android apps have already disappeared. The team's farewell address clearly hints that it's time to look for a replacement Mailbox. Considering the number of decent alternatives in the App Store and Google Play, it won't be that hard. And yet we decided to make your life even easier by choosing the best of them.
Outlook
Microsoft did not create a mobile version of Outlook from scratch, but simply took and bought the off-the-shelf - and rather popular - Acompli app along with its developers. But we don't care, because the mailer came out really excellent: with support for all popular accounts, deep integration with the calendar, contacts and cloud storage, as well as the ability to view office documents.
By the way, the former CEO of Acompli, now working on Outlook at Microsoft, is already Mailbox users, promising them that he will do everything possible to make them feel at home in Outlook.
Pros:
- Support for multiple accounts.
- Availability of versions for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac.
- Integration with calendar and services.
Minus:
Not the richest gesture control options
Application not found
Spark
As with all Readdle products, the ambition of Spark was already felt in the release version. The application allows you to customize a lot of different parameters. At the same time, they are set quite well out of the box, and you won't have to dig into the tinctures. Spark is built on smart filters that sort your incoming mail in a way that is convenient for you. It also has integration with popular cloud storages and a built-in file manager for working with attachments. Gestures and the so-called Quick Reply help to quickly manage letters - ready-made replies by analogy with SMS templates that appear if you reject an incoming call.
Pros:
- The ability to customize anything.
- Smart search.
- Filters.
- Integration with third party services.
- Apple Watch version.
Minus:
Lack of version for desktops and Android
Inbox by Google
One of the analogues, the closest in spirit to Mailbox. Google went the same way and merged mail with a task manager. But the main feature of Inbox is different - in the automatic sorting of letters based on smart algorithms and, of course, in interaction with Google services. Maps, calendars, flights - all this is automatically recognized in the correspondence and displayed in the form of links that can be opened in the corresponding application. Plus, all letters are grouped by type: mailings, purchases, social networks, and so on. Material Design may be a little strange for iOS users, but minimalism lovers will love it.
Pros:
- Advanced filtering algorithms.
- Full integration with other Google services.
- Web version for desktops.
Minuses:
- Filtering may not be for everyone.
- Supports Gmail only.
CloudMagic
CloudMagic, besides Gmail, works with all other services, including the finicky Exchange. As elsewhere, there is support for various services like Evernote, Pocket, Instapaper. Services are also used to work with tasks: with a double tap, you can turn an email into a Wunderlist, Todoist or OmniFocus task. Of the chips, you can highlight the notifications that come from the CloudMagic server (which saves the battery), and the synchronization settings for various folders.
Pros:
- Support for all popular accounts.
- Working with various web services and task managers.
- Versions for Android and Apple Watch.
Minuses:
- Lack of desktop versions.
- Not the broadest support for gesture controls.
Boxer
Boxer is another mailer that follows the same philosophy as Mailbox, and is sharpened to maximize the convenience of handling incoming mail. Its capabilities even surpass the aforementioned Mailbox in terms of reminders and delegation. Here, gestures are at the forefront, and any of them can be customized. There is integration with the calendar, smart sorting of incoming messages based on SaneBox algorithms, as well as templates for quick replies. Boxer works with Gmail, Yahoo Mail, iCloud, Exchange and other accounts.
Pros:
- Customizable gestures.
- Support for many accounts and third-party services.
- Reminders.
- Calendar.
Minuses:
- The application is paid (there is a trial version).
- Lack of desktop versions.
Dispatch
well suited for those who cannot imagine working with mail without quick actions with gestures. The application supports almost all popular services and a huge number of third-party services and applications. There are also ready-made response templates designed to save time when processing incoming correspondence. Other advantages of Dispatch include filtering, smart search and, of course, working with the calendar.
Pros:
- Fast actions.
- Integration with over 50 services.
- Ability to create templates.
Minuses:
- High price.
- Lack of versions for desktops and Android.
Mail pilot 2
With Mail Pilot, inbox zero doesn't seem like such an unattainable goal. This email client is also geared towards using the inbox as a to-do list, with reminders, calendar integration, and smart lists to help you group and organize emails in your inboxes. Mail Pilot comes in two versions: for iOS and. There is also a companion application for the Apple Watch, but developers have cheated Windows and Android users.
Pros:
- Integration with reminders and calendar.
- Filtering lists.
- Synchronization with the Mac version.
Minuses:
- High price.
- Lack of versions for Windows and Android
What else
Coming soon, the iOS version of Airmail, the popular Mac email client. Given the closure of Mailbox, it will most likely implement the functionality of the latter. By the way, if you know other worthy alternatives, you can share them in the comments.
