1. Roma

  • Mexico, USA.
  • Drama.
  • Duration: 135 minutes.
  • IMDb: 8, 7.

In the Colonia Roma area of Mexico City, there is a family that employs a maid, Cleo. She finds out that she is pregnant, and because of this, her boyfriend leaves her. And at the same time, problems begin in the family where the girl works.

Director Alfonso Cuarón ("Gravity") made a very personal film, telling about the area where he once grew up and about the life of ordinary people in the capital of Mexico. He wrote the script himself, acted as a director, cameraman and even an editor. Spectators and critics appreciated the beautiful and touching confession. The film has already received many awards, and soon it will probably compete for an Oscar.

2. Capernaum

  • Lebanon, USA.
  • Drama.
  • Duration: 121 minutes.
  • IMDb: 8, 0.

Zane is only 12 years old, but he already has to be an adult, because he was born into a poor Beirut family. The boy works and helps his brothers and sisters, but openly hates the whole world for his plight. One day he stabs a man and receives a five-year prison sentence. And then Zane sues his parents for giving him life.

The idea for the film originated from director Nadine Labaki at the moment when she saw a beggar woman on the street with a screaming baby in her arms. The film was not turned into a melodrama - it is a hard and true story about the difficult life of a child who was forced to grow up early. And the young actor coped with the role surprisingly believably.

3. Love, Simon

  • USA.
  • Drama, melodrama, comedy.
  • Duration: 110 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 7.

High school student Simon seems to be doing well: a normal family, school friends, authority over classmates. But he does not dare to admit his homosexuality to anyone. And then one day Simon starts a correspondence with a stranger and falls in love. But soon their communication falls into the hands of the school bully Martin, who threatens to reveal the secret of Samon if he does not help him start dating the school beauty.

Renowned screenwriter and producer, author of the superhero series "Arrow" and "Flash" Greg Berlanti shot an excellent teenage drama. There is no excessive emphasis on homosexuality in "Simon" - it is just an interesting film about the difficulties of growing up and finding your place in life.

4. Eighth grade

  • USA.
  • Drama, comedy.
  • Duration: 93 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 6.

Kayla, an eighth grader, feels insecure. She is closed in herself, and life at school sometimes seems to the heroine a real torture. But soon high school awaits her, where everything must change. In the meantime, she does the same thing as the other children: blogging.

Another teenage drama creates a very different mood than Love Simon. This film is filmed as naturally as possible and sometimes seems almost documentary (largely thanks to the excellent acting). The picture often makes the viewer feel uncomfortable and uncomfortable with the main character. And this makes the action seem even more lively.

5. Profile

  • Russia, USA, Great Britain, Cyprus.
  • Thriller, detective.
  • Duration: 105 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 5.

Freelance journalist Amy receives an assignment from the editor: to understand how Islamic terrorists recruit women. She creates a fake social media profile and contacts one of the radicals. But soon she realizes that she is sincerely attached to him.

Timur Bekmambetov, one after another, releases films, the action of which unfolds on the screens of computers and smartphones. But "Profile" still stands out among them. First of all - a serious topic and relevance (especially since the story is based on real events). In addition, the picture catches on with its ambiguity, and until the very end it is unclear whether this is a romantic story or a thriller about terrorists.

6. Crazy Rich Asians

  • USA.
  • Melodrama, comedy.
  • Duration: 120 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 1.

Chinese American Rachel travels with her boyfriend Nick to Singapore for his best friend's wedding. There she meets the family of her beloved and learns that he is from a very wealthy family. And now Rachel becomes the object of envy of others, although Nick's mother does not approve of their union.

In the United States, this romantic comedy became a box office hit. After all, this is the first major Hollywood release, where all the main roles are played by Asians, and the plot is not about martial arts or history. In general, Crazy Rich Asians is a pleasant film about the modern Cinderella.

7. American animals

  • Great Britain, USA.
  • Drama, crime.
  • Duration: 116 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 0.

Dreaming of fame as an artist, Spencer believes that in order to get what he wants, he needs not only talent, but also a serious life shock. And then, together with his restless friend Warren, he decides to steal from the library a very expensive book by a famous artist.

The film by director Bart Layton is built in a very unusual way. The action is presented on behalf of the heroes themselves, and at the same time they are left with the opportunity to be confused or deceived. This approach allows both to add a comedic component (when reality changes depending on the words), and simply to make the plot more alive. Moreover, the introduction says: “The story is not based on real events. This is reality."

8. If Beale Street could speak

  • USA.
  • Drama, melodrama, crime.
  • Duration: 119 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 0.

Twenty-two-year-old Fonni and his nineteen-year-old fiancée Tisch are planning to get married, especially since the girl is already pregnant. But their idyll comes to an end when the guy is arrested for rape, which he did not commit. The couple is trying not to lose feelings for each other, and the girl's mother wants to talk to the victim of the crime.

Perhaps the plot of this film is too simple and is made precisely in order to please the public. But director Barry Jenkins, who directed the 2016 Oscar-winning movie Moonlight, can tell touching stories in a way that makes viewers feel close and empathic.

9. Time of monsters

  • Philippines.
  • Musical, history.
  • Duration: 234 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 0.

The film is dedicated to the seventies, when a state of emergency was declared in the Philippines, overturning the constitution. Lorena's doctor opens a clinic for the poor in a small village, but soon disappears. Her husband, a dissident poet, is trying to find a wife and figure out what is happening.

Before watching this film, you should pay attention to the timing - 4 hours. And all this time, a dark story unfolds in black and white scenes, spiced with music and tunes. But “The Time of the Monsters” cannot be called a musical or a rock opera: such a technique only adds gloom and artistry to the picture. But in fact it is a cruel historical drama about real events.

10. Naked Juliet

  • Great Britain, USA.
  • Drama, melodrama, comedy, music.
  • Duration: 97 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 7.

Annie lives in a quiet town on the coast and has been dating Duncan for 15 years, who has one main hobby - the singer Tucker Crowe. He hung the whole room with posters of an idol and maintains a website about his work. Tired of this, Annie once leaves an angry comment on a Tucker song. And after that, the singer himself finds her, and they have an affair.

This is a largely naive film about people who themselves do not really understand what they are spending their lives on. Each character here wants to sympathize, but light jokes and unpretentious plot twists often defuse the atmosphere, leaving only a pleasant viewing experience.
