In this article, I'll show you how to look for a job using the LinkedIn social network. These tips will not be useful for members of the ordinary profession. However, they will prove to be effective for representatives of the IT and technical professions, marketers, salespeople, recruiters, top executives and a number of other positions. I also assume that you already know how to use LinkedIn, you have a registered profile and are familiar with the basic functions.

Recent research suggests that more and more recruiters are using professional social media platforms like LinkedIn to find employees, especially for key positions in the company.

For example, in three years, the use rate of LinkedIn has almost doubled - from 22% to 38%.

Job search on LinkedIn can be divided into two stages: active and passive.

The active phase allows you to find jobs yourself, while the passive phase helps recruiters find you quickly and before other candidates.

For the second stage, it is very important to increase the number of views on your profile. It is the number of profile views that will measure the effectiveness of the tips.

First of all, I tried all the tips on myself and increased the number of profile views from 40 per week to 210. Now my profile looks like this:.

And here are the statistics showing a sharp increase in views:

Before reading the tips, see how many profile views you currently have. Click on the Profile tab → Who's Viewed Your Profile:

Also on a separate tab you can see your rating among all contacts. My rating is now 89 out of 5,500, but I have very powerful networkers in my contacts, and it is simply unrealistic to overtake them. There are those who have more than 30,000 contacts.

General job search

So, looking for a job on LinkedIn starts with just looking at jobs. Here I can tell you one life hack.

Some companies are looking for Russian-speaking candidates to work in other countries. Therefore, when searching for vacancies, remove the restriction on searching for vacancies only in your country, and in key phrases enter “Russian” (with quotation marks) - this will help you to see vacancies where candidates with knowledge of the Russian language are needed in other countries.

If you do not limit yourself to any specific area of job search, then at the time of this writing, there were 2,768 vacancies with the phrase “Russian”. By the way, the first one that came across in its name indicates the search for a Russian-speaking specialist.

Subscribe to vacancies

Like any job search site, LinkedIn allows you to sign up for new jobs. I highly recommend doing this, since the likelihood that the recruiter will look at the resume is higher for those who responded in advance.

Search for statuses "looking for …" or "look for …"

Many recruiters in the Your professional headline or other sections write the name of the specialists they are looking for. Then they add people to their contacts and thus hint that you can discuss vacancies with them. But we can meet them halfway and make a search for such people.

We go to the search for people, in key phrases we write "looking for XXX", where instead of XXX we indicate the position or sphere.

This is what we see when we search for the phrase "looking for java":

We write recommendations to everyone

LinkedIn has the option "Write a recommendation" or "Request a recommendation". I recommend writing 3-5 recommendations to your colleagues and asking them to write back. Recruiters will conclude that you are a competent specialist at the sight of recommendations (which will give you 3-5 additional points out of 100).

The following tips will help you improve your search rankings. When a recruiter puts in a search phrase that interests him, for example, java developer, he wants to find candidates who are engaged in this.

The higher your ranking in search results, the earlier you will catch the eye of a recruiter.

The ranking in the search results is influenced by many different factors (the number of contacts; the number of general contacts with the one who is looking for; the names of positions, companies, projects; text information within the profile, and so on).

Therefore, the tips below will help you improve your search rankings.

Loading a list of contacts from Facebook

Since LinkedIn is a social network, albeit a professional one, it is still a competitor to Facebook, and you cannot easily upload contacts directly. But there is an extremely simple way that helped me upload all 3,000 contacts from LinkedIn.

This is done through the Yahoo mailbox.

To get started, start any mailbox on Yahoo.com. Then go to the "Contacts" section (the icon on the top left, click the Actions button, select Imort, and the page for importing contacts from Facebook opens). Click Imort and you get all the addresses from Facebook to Yahoo:

Then go to LinkedIn, select import from Yahoo, and all your contacts will receive an invitation from you to join LinkedIn.

Loading a list of contacts from Gmail and other mailboxes

Everything is much simpler here. LinkedIn can do this directly.

All of these steps allow for a significant increase in the number of contacts on LinkedIn, which will lead to an increase in profile views.

Registering keywords for search in Summary

The information written in this section plays a very important role. Here you should include all the keywords for your profession that will help recruiters find you.

For myself, I have registered all those that are important for the position of an HR director.

We write keywords in each place of work

We also do it for every place of work. In my last job, I wrote down all the keywords that recruiters would look for, as well as keywords that networkers might be interested in.

Networkers are people who actively expand their network of contacts for different purposes.

Copying keywords from the top 10

If you have a stupor while writing keywords, just copy them from your most successful colleagues and edit them to your liking.

Finding the most successful is easy: just type in the position of interest in the search, and LinkedIn will give you a list of the most attractive profiles.

Writing achievements

This tip will add appeal to your resume. When searching for candidates, recruiters can look at 100-200 resumes. Few people write achievements in their resume, so if you registered them yourself, it will increase the chances of being selected for further contact.

Achievements should be written in the form of completed actions, preferably with numbers, percentages, and so on.

I write achievements in the description of functional responsibilities, making the space with asterisks:

We describe volunteer activities

LinkedIn allows you to list all volunteer projects. At my place, I indicated those that were within the framework of well-known organizations (for example, AIESEC) or which are consonant with my position. This enhances my profile when searching.

Adding projects

Adding projects also allows you to strengthen the profile. There are two recommendations here: the title of projects should contain words that reflect your position, as well as famous companies. Also in projects I indicate participation in conferences.

Adding Slideshare Presentations

Add only those presentations that really show your experience, not ordinary presentations of the next idea.

Add published articles

This adds the ability to write keywords from your professional activity, by which you can be found. Recruiters always put keywords in the search, so your profile will appear in the search results.

Making a profile in two languages

It's a tedious task translating your profile into another language. But someone can hammer in Russian words in the search, and since there are not so many profiles in Russian as in English, there is less competition.

We contact companies and recruiters of interest to us

The easiest way to catch the eye of a prospective employer is to find him and add him to your contact list. Make a list of interesting companies, hammer them into the search and add them to your contacts.

And now the secret, without which you will not succeed.

LinkedIn usually restricts friends from strangers. But not LinkedIn for mobile. Therefore, iPad, iPhone, Android is your opportunity to add almost any number of people to your contacts.

After about 1000 additions, I still could not reach the limit.:)

Endorsim others

LinkedIn has such a feature - Endorse skills. Usually it pops up at the top of the profile and allows you to make an endorsement with one button. The person immediately receives a notification and runs to see who did it.

We use the "Who viewed the profile" feature

Check who viewed your profile. If these are interesting recruiters from interesting companies, add them to your contacts and ask how you can be useful.

We are looking for an executive search, recruitment researcher, recruitment consultant in our country and add (middle mouse button)

Very often the person you need is hidden behind the job title described above. Hammer them into the search and add them to your contacts. The easiest way is to add with the middle mouse button - this way the addition is faster.

The photo is large, the face is visible as much as possible, you smile, a relaxed pose

A high-quality photo, where you can see your face, significantly increases your chances of viewing your profile. Take a look at the photos of the first two places with the highest profile views from my network of contacts:
