Critic Alexei Khromov tells how the last part of the famous franchise came out. Alas, almost none.
Star Wars has one of the largest fanbases in the world. And now the saga ends. No, of course, there will be new films and TV series coming out, not to mention cartoons and comics. But at the center of the plot of the main episodes has always been the Skywalker family, responsible for the balance of the Force in the galaxy. And the ninth part concludes their story.
Ryan Johnson's experiment with the previous film The Last Jedi turned out to be rather controversial: the director decided to abandon the story of Rey's past and killed the main villain Snoke. Therefore, the work on the finale was entrusted to JJ Abrams, who had already directed the seventh episode of The Force Awakens.
And, perhaps, this is the most unfortunate move for the entire franchise. Because the movie Skywalker. Sunrise”creates two exactly opposite sensations. Combat scenes, special effects and action are at their best here. But the script turned out to be so indistinct that it is simply impossible to take it seriously.
Maximalism instead of plot
After the release of The Force Awakens, Abrams was already accused of simply retelling the story of A New Hope for the third time. But the director decided to continue to follow the beaten track. And therefore "Skywalker. Sunrise "turns out to be another version of Return of the Jedi. And if the original is considered far from the best part of the franchise, then what can we say about the retelling.
But an even bigger problem with the plot was that after Snoke's death in Star Wars, there was no main villain left, and Kylo Ren, rushing between light and darkness, was in no way fit for this role. And so the authors decided to simply bring into action one of the characters from the old films.
They didn't even bother to explain it, just on the opening credits the audience is told that he is alive and has been hiding all these years, making an ominous plan. Kylo Ren wants to join a coalition with him, and Rey, Finn and Poe will have to defeat the Sith in an unequal struggle. But first, they will have to find the secret hideout of the main antagonist.
In general, everything is quite complicated with explanations and logic in Voskhod. Those fans who still dreamed of learning how the First Order was formed after the collapse of the Empire and why it is so strong will be disappointed. Moreover, an even more dangerous army will appear. Also from where.
But the authors try to compensate for all such shortcomings with maximalism. Now the galaxy is threatened not only by the First Order, but by the most powerful fleet in history, where each ship has a cannon that destroys planets (previously only the Death Star and its variations were capable of this). And, of course, all the free worlds will fight them.
The use of the Force has also become incredibly grotesque. Experienced Luke Skywalker, after decades of learning the Force, was able to move his disembodied shell to another planet. Kylo Ren is easily tolerated even physically.
The greatest master Yoda was struggling to lift the ship lying at the bottom of the lake. And Rei copes with the flying one. The ability to heal increases before our eyes, now even fatal wounds are not very dangerous. And this seems to devalue the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker, who was looking in the Force for an opportunity to save his beloved.
Rey has previously been accused of being too Mary Sue (the so-called archetype of an all-powerful and extremely lucky character). Now she is lucky in absolutely everything. And therefore she fights perfectly with swords, swims across the raging sea, heals wounds, negotiates with anyone she meets for help, and even flies a little.
Toy characters and fan service
In order to somehow maintain the intensity of emotions, the heroes are constantly put in deadly situations and make the audience upset because of their death. The only problem is that most of them survive in the end.
One character almost dies three times in a movie. And every time everything is furnished as tragically as possible.
The heroes say goodbye to each other so touchingly that the audience will surely cry. And after 15 minutes back in the ranks.
Moreover, even minor characters are treated in this way. They appear in the film for several reasons. Firstly, most newcomers perform simple functions to promote Rei and her companions: every time, an assistant appears out of nowhere and tells her what to do next. Moreover, the motivation of the heroes is explained in two or three words, which in the case of a traitor in the First Order looks almost comical.
Secondly, they themselves regularly find themselves in dangerous situations in order to make viewers worry again. And thirdly, Disney seems to just want to release more toys with different characters. There is no other way to explain the appearance of a cute but unnecessary droid and, most importantly, very charismatic knights of Ren, who do not affect the plot at all.
And at the same time, the authors put pressure on nostalgia as much as possible, returning a lot of old heroes. And if the appearance of the Jedi in the form of the ghosts of the Force is understandable, then a couple of other characters return without much logic, just to make the fans of the classics smile.
In fact, they are not all that bad in and of themselves. Everyone understands that the latest Star Wars films are pure fan service. But, flirting with new characters, they often simply forget about the old ones. For the ninth episode, Finn does nothing useful until the very end, he just goes everywhere for his comrades. Poe Dameron, unlike The Last Jedi, now at least manages to fly a lot, but also has little effect on the development of the plot.
There is only hope for Rei. But here, too, history fails. In the previous part, Johnson boldly canceled the idea of the inheritance of the Force and showed that even the daughter of ordinary peasants could be a Jedi. And the cleaning boy in the finale only confirmed this.
Now Abrams refuses this move, and in the most banal way: with a phrase in the style of "I didn't mean that." He again returns to the eternal clarifications of the question of heredity, which have already been sorted out in the classic trilogy, completely devaluing the loud phrase "The past must die" from the eighth episode. And the boy was simply forgotten.
As a result, the plot of the picture looks like the creation of a fan, inclined to maximalism. All canons are retelling in a circle, increasing the drama by 2-3 times. Although the viewer already knows exactly how it will end.
Fans and opponents of The Last Jedi agreed on one thing: the film was a daring experiment for the world of Star Wars. And that is why the controversy around him does not subside to this day. "Skywalker. Sunrise "is unlikely to cause much discussion. There is almost nothing to say about the plot. There remains only a good visual part.
But at the same time, beautiful scenes and cool action
Oddly enough, the main advantage of the film is the same maximalism of the author. Simply because it makes the picture rich, and the plot fills with action. From the very beginning, the heroes are thrown into a kind of quest: they must fly around the planets in search of clues. And that is why in "Voskhod" they show several amazing worlds with desert, sea, caves and many other beautiful locations at once.
Moreover, "Star Wars" has always been famous for funny alien races, and there are many of them too. Aborigines speak unusual languages, and also funny move and dance.
In these same beautiful locations, battles take place. And they are very good. In The Last Jedi, many people lacked lightsaber combat. In "Sunrise" the authors show almost the most beautiful fight in the history of the franchise. Rey and Kylo make incredible jumps, fight alone with several opponents.
Plus speedster chases and suddenly flying attack aircraft, the destruction of a fighter with a lightsaber, a firefight at the stern of a spaceship and many other large-scale battles.
And, of course, do not forget about the battles of fleets both in space and above the surface of planets. With the epic battle scenes of this franchise, no previous installment can be compared. Therefore, Skywalker. Sunrise”will certainly delight those who expect only beautiful pictures and adventures from the film.
Yes, and the already mentioned nostalgia, it is quite possible that many will like it. The finale does loop the whole story, returning to the very origins. The main thing here is not to try to analyze what is happening on the screen and not to look for logic. Otherwise, you can get upset again.
It's no secret that Star Wars was originally conceived as youth fiction without much depth. It was just a compilation of classic stories in the shell of a space western. But since the world of the franchise has grown so much over the years, the fans, of course, were waiting for answers to many questions and a clear completion of the storylines from the previous parts.
After all, George Lucas himself once tried to understand the nature of the Force and the origin of Darth Vader. Rogue One clarified the appearance of a security breach in the Death Star.
Perhaps someday fans will be told about the appearance of the First Order, the parents of Rey, the surviving villain, the sudden transformation of Leia from a princess to a Jedi master, Captain Phasma, and the Knights of Ren. Disney and Lucasfilm probably still have a lot of films and TV shows in store for this.
But alas, now they didn't bother to figure it out. Therefore, Star Wars: Skywalker. Sunrise is just a simple entertainment for two and a half hours, and not the end of the story.
