AR filters, or masks, are animated effects that use the front camera of a smartphone. The visual effect is superimposed on the user's face and moves with him thanks to motion capture. Masks were originally popularized by Snapchat, an app I'd like to keep in the 2010s alongside the Balenciaga Triple S and Potirany. At some point, photographs of people with dog ears could be found at every turn.

Facebook's response was not long in coming: the corporation bought the Belarusian startup MSQRD, which also developed AR filters, and in the spring of 2017 introduced masks in history. The heyday of custom masks came in the fall of 2018 when Facebook adapted the Camera Effects platform for Instagram and launched an open beta. The new platform, dubbed Spark AR, allows anyone to create a mask with their own hands and share it in stories.

All of you have probably seen the masks on Instagram, which let you know what kind of prime minister you will become or what kind of Disney princess you are (mind you, I'm Elsa!)

They were funny the first 75 thousand times, but now everyone is a little tired. Therefore, the more people make masks, the faster they (masks) will die!

When you read the article, you will no longer have to pay freelancers who ask 150 thousand rubles for them. You can make at least 10 such masks on your own (and throw 150 thousand rubles for me, for example).

In short, the algorithm looks like this:

  1. Download Spark AR - it is in this program that we will create a mask. Download it for free from here.
  2. Download my mask template from Yandex. Disk or directly (there are no viruses, I answer).
  3. Replace my pictures in the template with your own, change a couple of numbers in the script.
  4. Submit the mask for moderation and wait for confirmation.
  5. PROFIT.

Let's go!

How to create a mask in Spark AR

1. To set the photo that will be displayed in the preview of the mask on your forehead, replace the "cover" file with any other graphic file of your choice.

To do this, right-click on the cover title and select Replace.

Done, now you have cabbage (for example) over your head.

2. This step requires a little more action from you, but it's easy too!

Delete my slideshow first. To do this, select my animation, then click on the image icon next to Texture in the upper right corner and click Remove in the drop-down menu.

Add your pictures to the slideshow. In the same Texture menu, select the New Image Texture option. In the window that opens, select all the images that you want to use in the mask and click Open.

3. I have written a ready-made script for you, so you can leave it as it is. But if you want to change some of the parameters, I'll give you a couple of hints which variables can be adjusted in the Patch Editor.

If you need to increase or decrease the slideshow time, then change this variable (the number means the number of seconds):

If you have uploaded more or less pictures than in my template (13), enter your number in the second line of the Random menu so that everything works correctly.

How to check if the mask is working

  1. In the lower left corner, select the phone icon with an arrow - Test on Device.
  2. In the Send to App section, find Instagram Camera and click Send.
  3. A push notification will be sent to the phone. Click on it and a preview of the mask will open in your Instagram app.

What's next

Use the File → Export menu to export your mask to a *.arexport file. Now you can give it to the client and get your 150 thousand rubles! You can also submit the mask for moderation to Facebook yourself. To do this, go here. When uploading, you can enter the name of the mask (it will be displayed to the left of your account name) and choose a location (Instagram or Facebook, you will have to choose one thing). Moderation period is on average five working days.
