The film by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Hertz is a prime example of the cult "bad" movie. Toxic Avenger has cheap special effects and a clichéd plot. Then several sequels were shot for the film and even an animated series for children.

But not a single studio wanted to allocate money for a risky project: a couple of years earlier, the Howard the Duck tape with similar graphics failed. But still the picture was removed, and the costumes for the actors were even created by the studio of Jim Henson ("The Muppet Show"). As a result, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became one of the highest grossing independent films in history.
