There is very little time left until the first episode of the third season of Twin Peaks. To brighten up the anticipation, Lifehacker offers to get acquainted with the most interesting information from the book "The Secret History of Twin Peaks".

The Secret History of Twin Peaks is framed as an anonymous dossier of an archivist whose identity is revealed on the last pages of the book. The events described in the dossier begin in September 1805. The book contains excerpts from the diaries of researchers William Clark and Meriwether Lewis, who studied the territory of the future city on behalf of the third US President Thomas Jefferson.

The end of the dossier coincides with the events of the last episode of the second season of Twin Peaks. 2. Douglas Milford - Twin Peaks' most underrated character

The book focuses on Douglas Milford, who played a key role in the study of supernatural phenomena in Twin Peaks. 3. Events of the city of Twin Peaks intersect with real historical dates and characters

There are practically no references to real historical events in the series (only the mention of the Blue Book project comes to mind), but they are quite common in the book. It is surprising how Mark Frost managed to organically write such events as the non-Persian war, the Roswell incident and the impeachment of Richard Nixon into the history of the city.

Very real characters took an active part in the life of the fictional city: actor Jackie Gleason, rocket scientist Jack Parsons and Scientologist Ron Hubbard. Moreover, the names and events here are not taken from the ceiling, but are based on thinking out real historical facts.

4. Margaret Lanterman is the most sensible woman in town

In 1947, an alarming event for the residents of the city occurred: three primary school students lagged behind a group of classmates on a march. Rescuers searched for the missing children all night. A day later, the travelers were found. They were safe and sound, only hungry and very thirsty. The strange thing is that the children were sure that their absence lasted no more than an hour. One of the participants in this incident was seven-year-old Maggie Coulson. Apparently, Maggie visited the place where Major Briggs ended up 40 years later.

Most people know Margaret as the Lady of the Log. She looks like a mental patient, but psychotherapist Lawrence Jacoby believes that Margaret Lanterman is the most sensible woman in town.

The story of the log is also revealed in Mark Frost's book. It turns out that Margaret's husband died while extinguishing a sudden fire on their wedding day. After the funeral, the widow went to the forest, and returned with a fir log in her hands. Since then, Margaret has not parted with him.

5. Mysterious crime happened in July 2016

The first page of The Secret History of Twin Peaks is a memo from Gordon Cole stating that the dossier was found on July 17, 2016 at the crime scene. It is mentioned that the investigation is being classified three levels above the top secret. Perhaps the third season of the series will be tied precisely to this investigation.

There are factual inconsistencies in The Secret History of Twin Peaks, for example, the book and the series have different maiden names for Norma Jennings and Nadine Hurley, and there are references to missing parts of the dossier. It also attracts attention that the dossier ends at the events of the end of the second season, while facts from the biographies of some characters go much further than 1989.

Mark Frost responded on Twitter with the phrase All will be revealed in time. With this, the director provoked the fans of the series even more. It has gotten to the point that many are speculating that parallel universes will appear in the third season. But there is one assumption that seems much more reasonable. It is possible that the dossier was edited by someone who has something to hide.
