Don't dismiss your own feelings just because someone else is worse off.

Why is it okay to be sad about little things?

In recent months, we have all had to give up many important things. Cancel birthday, graduation and wedding celebrations, reschedule trips and travel. Add to that the stress of work and anxiety about the health of loved ones, and depression seems inevitable.

As thanatologist David Kessler, who studies grief, noted, “The loss of normal living conditions, fear of economic consequences, lack of communication - all these hit us, and we grieve. Collectively. We are not used to this feeling of general sadness."

Don't berate yourself for this feeling. “You can be sad about your losses and at the same time have compassion for the sick,” says psychologist Robin Gurvich. And there were a lot of losses. Someone was left without work, someone without their own business, which took years to create. Someone has lost a sense of security, because they are forced to risk their health due to duty. We are all trying to orient ourselves in the new world, unlike our usual reality.

In this chaos, it's perfectly normal to feel sad about the little things and find joy in the little things.

Gurvich knows this well. She started working as a psychologist in 1995 in Oklahoma, just as a major terrorist attack took place. Then, many parents considered it inappropriate to arrange holidays for their children, given what had happened. But, as she notes, for a child, a birthday holiday means a lot, even if at this time a general tragedy was played out.

The same applies to small joys and sorrows during an epidemic. They may not be commensurate with what is happening in society as a whole, but they are important for you personally.

However, if you feel that sadness and depression is with you all the time, do not try to deal with everything alone. What does not kill us does not always make us stronger. Depression and anxiety certainly shouldn't be ignored. So if it's hard for you, if you feel that you are choking on everything that happens, seek help.
