Strength training for runners: strengthening your back

We keep repeating that not only strong legs are important for runners, but also a strong body. Training should be balanced, running should be followed by strength and flexibility exercises. Today we have prepared for you a selection of exercises to strengthen your back.

I remember vividly how my back ached after the first run up the hills. I didn’t know then that the problem was not only that hill running had its own rules, but also that I had a very weak back. The day after the run, when I tried to run again, my lower back started to ache and fall off. It was very unpleasant. But stretching saved me from the pain. I had to seriously do strength training and my back, since it was my weakest point.

In general, a strong back is important not only for running, but also for your health in general, as the clamps and pains in different parts of the body that they caused disappear. The only, but very big BUT - especially difficult exercises should be performed exclusively under the supervision of a trainer, since back problems (as well as with all other parts of the body) are very serious.

Video number 1

Watch your back and muscles while doing this simple exercise. Particular attention should be paid to the muscles between the shoulder blades. And remember that the muscles of the back should work, not the muscles of the arms;)

Video number 2

Great lower back exercises from MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) trainers!

In the first exercise (Superman), be sure to keep your head up. During this exercise, you should look down at all times.

Video number 3

This video shows exercises to relax your back and exercises to strengthen it. You don't have to do everything. Try it and choose what you like and what suits you. Read the descriptions very carefully and do not start training without consulting a trainer if you have back problems, as some of the exercises shown are quite difficult.

Video number 4

There are a lot of conversations at the beginning of the video, so rewind to 2:39 and look at the exercises.

Video number 5

The last video for today is dumbbell exercises. Girls take lighter weights.

And once again I want to remind you that back work is a very serious matter. If you have problems or injuries, under no circumstances should you exercise without consulting your doctor! Exercises without weight can be performed independently (there are no special twists). But if you have never practiced before and decided to pick up dumbbells or special equipment (for example, TRX), it is better to conduct the first few workouts under the supervision of a trainer.

Productive workouts for you!
