Windows is a great operating system, there is no doubt about that. However, there are some points in which the operating system from Microsoft is hopelessly outperformed by the free Linux family.
In this article, I used Linux Mint as an example, which I have used successfully for many years. However, all of the following applies equally to almost any Linux-based operating system.
1. Updates
Windows update system is terrible. It brings stress, irritation and pain. On the web, you can read many angry descriptions of the surprises Windows presents with updates: sudden reboots, freezes, bugs and unexpected errors.
As for a single system of updates for applications, it simply does not exist. Each program solves this problem by its own efforts and means. Some run background processes that constantly check for new versions, others do it every time the program starts. And still others do nothing at all. As a result, you continue to use old versions, unaware of the release of updates.
In Linux, everything is much simpler and more convenient. You simply receive a notification about the appearance of system patches and new versions of programs and install them all in one click. No reboots, freezes or downtime. There is even nothing to talk about.
2. Security
Only the lazy didn't write about holes in the Windows security system. It has been broken, is being broken and will be broken. And the problem here is not at all the curvature of the programmers' hands - I am sure that the best of the best work at Microsoft. The fact is that, unfortunately, it is simply impossible to create such a complex system without errors.
Many argue that Linux-based operating systems contain just as many vulnerabilities, but hackers don't need them due to the platform's weak popularity. Most likely it is, but it is not that important. The result is important. Linux is now much more reliable and secure than any operating system made by Microsoft.
3. Customization
When I talk about interface settings, many contemptuously grimace and believe that they do not need all these recoloring at all. But we are not talking about beauty, but about the convenience of work.
All people are created differently, so everyone can have their own preferences and working methods. It is convenient for one to use the "Start" button, for another to place shortcuts on the desktop, and the third in general to do magic in the command line.
From this point of view, any Linux gives much more freedom than Windows. Here you are free to customize the appearance and functionality of the system to such an extent that even the creators themselves will not recognize it. Yes, sometimes it takes knowledge and time, but there is such an opportunity. And for so many users, it matters.
4. Requirements
The Windows operating system is quite a thing. It will not entertain and please you if you try to install it on some ancient computer. No, in this case, Windows will begin to sniff, rattle the hard drive and show its displeasure with all its might.
Linux is simpler in this regard. The operating system even runs on hardware that should have been thrown away for a long time. And if some fresh distribution is not installed, you can always find a replacement for it. In the Linux family, there are plenty of super-lightweight copies that you can literally install on a coffee grinder or vacuum cleaner.
5. Price
The most recent Windows 10 has recently been distributed free of charge as an update for previous versions of the operating system. But now it's in the past. All new users need to pay. Yes, there are also pirated versions and cracks, but we won't even talk about that. We're honest people, aren't we?
The Linux operating system is completely free. The distribution kit itself is free, its updates, and even almost all software is distributed free of charge. You do not need to pay a penny, except for those cases when you feel deeply and yourself want to thank the developers. In our difficult times, this is an important plus, it seems to me.
6. Friendliness
The Windows operating system doesn't like competition. If you decide to install it on your computer, then it will not tolerate the presence on the hard drive of other systems and will try in any way to complicate their use. I chose Windows - stop running to the side!
Linux knows how to quite peacefully coexist with other systems. At the time of installation, you will be prompted to save the current OS and add the corresponding entry to the boot menu so that you can switch between systems at any time. Moreover, many distributions have a live version, which allows you to try out the system without installing it on a hard disk. Liked it - put it next to Windows and use it.
In this article, I have not in any way set myself the goal of diminishing the merits of the Windows operating system. She has both weak and very strong points. It is not for nothing that Microsoft products still occupy a leading position. However, this does not mean that you need to forever lock yourself on one platform and abandon experiments.
Try Linux. Suddenly you will like it.
