With the release of iOS 12.1, the performance management feature was introduced to the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X. It allows you to turn off processor slowdown and improve the speed of your smartphone. Previously, this feature was present only on the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus and SE.

Earlier, Apple's support page stated the following:

Improved hardware and software for iPhone 8 and later can help you more accurately estimate battery capacity and device power requirements, increasing overall system performance. Thus, performance management in iOS is implemented in a new way, which allows you to more accurately detect and prevent unexpected shutdown threats. As a result, performance management may be less noticeable on iPhone 8 and later. Over time, the capacity and peak performance of the battery on all iPhones will degrade and require replacement of the battery.

But after the release of iOS 12.1, the following information appeared on this page:

Starting with iOS 12.1, Performance Management is available on iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, but it may be less noticeable on those with improved hardware and software.

The performance management function does not allow you to disable the slowdown of the processor without damaging the battery: it will age faster. On the other hand, you can leave the deceleration on: this way the smartphone will slow down more, but the battery will last longer.

To find the feature, go to the Battery section in Settings and open the Battery Status tab. There, under the "Peak performance" item, there will be a "Disable" button, but only if the battery cannot provide peak power.

Recently, the Italian Competition Authority fined Apple 5 million euros. The reason was that the company slowed down smartphones without informing users about it and not giving them the opportunity to roll back to an older version of the operating system, which does not have the function described above.
