A meteorite falls on an ordinary girl, Susan Murphy. As a result, she begins to grow, turning into a giantess. The authorities then place her in a secret base, where Susan joins a team of strange creatures, which includes the Missing Link, Insecosaurus, B. O. B. and Dr. Cockroach. It is these monsters that are the only ones who can save the Earth from the invasion of aliens.
The very image of Susan is partly copied from the classic film "Attack of the 50-foot woman", even the height of the heroines coincides. And in general, in "Monsters vs. Aliens" you can see a lot of references to old movies.

Because of this, the cartoon does not always keep within the framework of the children's story, but it still remains kind and didactic.

But in the midst of the fun, the most terrible monster bursts into the hotel - an ordinary cheerful guy Jonathan, who fought off his friends during a hike.
Anyone familiar with the horror genre will recognize the characters of classic books and films in the hotel guests. Although one can only wonder how charming they were all. The audience loved the cartoon very much and paid off well at the box office, so two more sequels were filmed for it.

This cartoon was the first ever to win an Oscar in the new Best Animated Feature Film category, which was introduced in 2002. But it is much more important that the authors decided on an unusual move, making the main character not a noble knight, but a terrible ogre. The audience fell in love with Shrek very much, and many more sequels were filmed about him.

Monsters, Inc. came out the same year as Shrek. And it's interesting that two of the most successful cartoons at once talked about characters who usually act as villains. However, the work of the Pixar studio does not have as many sequels as the competitor - there is only the prequel "Monsters University", which tells about the acquaintance of Mike and Sally.
