It is difficult to independently understand the intricacies of compulsory and voluntary car insurance. Is it possible to insure not the car, but individual parts? Why do you need a car inspection when applying for a comprehensive insurance policy? Is compensation for damage to the perpetrator of an accident eligible if the car is insured?

How is the cost of the MTPL policy calculated and can you save money?

The base rate determined by the insurer is multiplied by the coefficients - they are determined by the Bank of Russia. The minimum and maximum values of the base rate for OSAGO are also set by the Bank of Russia. For example, for vehicles of category B for individuals, the base rate ranges from 2,471 to 5,436 rubles. Within the limits of minimum and maximum values, insurers independently set the values of the base rates, depending on the factors determined by them.

Coefficients of insurance rates depend on the territory of preferential use, the number of insurance claims made, the list of persons allowed to drive, and other parameters. For example, if the driver has not had an accident for 10 years, the insurance rate for him will be reduced by half.

From August 24, 2020, the cost of the tariff consists of more than 20 criteria. This allows you to give an individual tariff to each driver. Therefore, the main rule of economy is to be an accurate and responsible driver. Here are some more ways to reduce the cost of OSAGO:

  • Save your policies and contracts for all insurance periods. The presence of an insurance history, especially a break-even one, gives the right to a discount. Is the OSAGO policy valid abroad?

No, only on the territory of the Russian Federation. If you are going to travel by car outside the country, you need to buy a "green card" - this is an analogue of OSAGO, operating in 48 countries. Is it possible today to make OSAGO on a diagnostic card that ends tomorrow?

What is KBM?

How is MSC calculated if I issue OSAGO without restrictions?

Starting from April 2019, MTPL on OSAGO policies with an unlimited list of those admitted to management is always equal to one. Even if, after several years of trouble-free driving, the owner decides to issue MTPL without restrictions, the KBM will still constitute one unit.

How is the cost calculated if you need to enter another driver with 3 years of driving experience into the insurance policy? What documents are needed and is the presence of the car owner required?

The calculation for adding additional drivers to the OSAGO policy is based on the length of service and the bonus-malus coefficient of new drivers. If the experience of additional people is more than the experience of the policyholder, and their MSC is the same as that of the policyholder or higher, then the new driver will be entered free of charge. And if the policyholder turns out to be a more experienced driver, you will have to pay extra. In your case, if you have more than 3 years of experience, then an additional payment will be required.

To make additions to the policy, you need to provide the insurance company with the MTPL policy (or just say its number) and a copy of the second driver's rights. The presence of a co-driver is optional. Only the policyholder can change the insurance conditions (including the list of drivers). Another option is registration through the E-Garant system, which is built into the calculators of insurance companies. Is it possible to receive payment in cash under the OSAGO policy?

Under OSAGO agreements, you can choose a cash payment only in one of the following cases:

  • The cost of repair work is more than 400,000 rubles.

In all other cases, the car will be repaired by the insurance company.

I received an answer from the insurance company that under the OSAGO for a dented and scratched bumper, I can receive a payment of 5,000 rubles. The car is 10 years old. For this amount in Moscow, it is unrealistic to restore the part or even paint it. What to do in such cases?

By law, the victim can only request a copy of the insurance certificate with the calculation of the amount to be paid. Why does OSAGO insure someone from my actions that led to an accident, and not me from whose fault I was injured?

The logic is this: if I have suffered, but not guilty, then the insurance will compensate me for the loss. So car owners are legally protected from other people's mistakes. And the perpetrators pay for their own mistakes on their own.

Will there be compensation for damage caused not on the road, but in the yard or in the parking lot?

However, there are exceptions. It is possible not to provide a car for inspection if:

  • You are registering a new car in the showroom.
  • Go to a new insurance company with a valid comprehensive insurance policy.

I have two "Mini Casco" insurances in different insurance companies. When an insured event occurs, can I expect to receive payments for both insurances?

Read the terms of the contract. By law, no one prohibits insuring a car at once in two or even three insurance companies at full cost. However, when an insured event occurs, you can either get insurance coverage in one company, or in parts proportional to the amount of insurance, in each of them. This is perfectly legal and provided for by both the Civil Code and the law on insurance. You just need to notify the insurance.

Is it possible to demand compensation for damage for an accident from an insurance company, if you yourself are the culprit of the accident?

You can, if the culprit has a comprehensive insurance policy. In this case, the insurance company will indemnify for the damage even in situations where the driver is at fault. OSAGO covers damage only to the injured party.

There is a car of category D for personal use, the technical inspection is passed, but I cannot make insurance. Why is that?
