What is this workout

It's no secret that regular exercise improves health. However, their benefits do not end there. According to recent studies, certain types of exercise can significantly slow down aging and increase life expectancy.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a cardio workout that alternates between high-intensity workouts and short breaks.

For example, interval running, in which you run a short distance to the limit of your ability, then rest for a minute or two, and then repeat the run. It is not easy to endure such training, but the result is worth it.

How do they work

Interval training studies, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, were conducted in two age groups. The first group consisted of men and women from 18 to 30 years old, the second included men and women from 65 to 80 years old. For 12 weeks, the subjects regularly attended classes that included HIIT. At the end of the experiment, both groups showed results that suggest a slowdown in aging.

Both groups showed an increase in insulin sensitivity, which means a lower risk of diabetes. An increase in the activity of ribosomes was also noted, which, in turn, means improvements in protein biosynthesis. Participants in the younger group had a 49% increase in mitochondrial function, which is responsible for the production of energy by the cells of the body. For participants in the older age group, the increase in this indicator was 69%.

According to the author of the experiment, Dr. Sreekumaran Nair (Dr. Sreekumaran Nair), the growth of protein synthesis and the increase in energy produced allow not only to stop, but also to reverse some age-related changes in cells. High-intensity interval training stimulates both of these processes, thereby significantly slowing the aging of the body.

If you haven't already incorporated HIIT into your workout routine, now is the time to do it. They will not only improve your well-being and appearance, but also give you a few extra years of life.
