On the eve of the big holiday, Lifehacker shares tips on what and how to eat and drink to feel good the next day.
How to eat without harm to health
The main mistake is that we try to save a place for the most delicious and do not eat before the festive feast. This is harmful for several reasons.
First, when you deliberately starve before the holiday, your brain thinks especially hard about food, thus giving you permission to eat whatever you want as soon as you are at the table. Bringing yourself to a state in which you are not aware of what and how much you eat is not a good idea.
Skipping meals can lead to irritability and depression. Also, for the body, jumps in blood sugar, due to such jumps, you will eat even more.
In the morning before the holiday, you can eat foods containing protein and fiber, such as eggs and fruits, a slice of bread with cheese or yogurt. Light vegetable soup is suitable for lunch, but meat soup is best left until evening. So you will start the feast without feeling wild hunger.
At the holiday table, enjoy vegetables and meat or fish, choose one sweet dish and eat as much as will fit in your palm. Do not forbid yourself something, otherwise you will feel unhappy. It is much better to control the amount of food eaten, not overeat and stay satisfied.
How to drink with minimal harm to health
Drinkwel co-founder and CEO Greg Huang has compiled a list of tips on Quora.
1. Avoid sugar cocktails. Drinks with juice and sugar syrup, energy drinks or cola are hard on the stomach.
Try mixing alcohol with water and fresh juice without added sugar.
2. The more transparent the better. Vodka, gin, or light beer are much easier on the body - and less calories - than whiskey, bourbon, or red wine.
3. Do not mix different alcoholic drinks. It is bad for your stomach and will affect your well-being. Mixing alcohol is always a bad idea. Pick one drink of your choice and stop there.
4. Take breaks. Choose a period (a week or more) when you will not drink at all. You will become more susceptible to alcohol, spend less, and have as much fun as usual. And your liver will be grateful to you.
5. Eat right the next day. If you do get a hangover, eat right in the morning: eggs and freshly squeezed juice. Fatty foods will not make you feel better and will not "absorb" alcohol - your body has already done this, and heavy food will only add unpleasant sensations. The best thing that you can do for yourself is that which will fill your need for vitamins and nutrients.
6. Eat before you drink. A snack or full meal before the first glass will give your body time to process alcohol and reduce the likelihood of nausea, headache, and stomach pain. For example, starchy and dairy products envelop the stomach and prepare it for alcohol.
7. Eat while drinking. When we drink alcohol, we often eat things that we wouldn't eat sober: chips or questionable pizza. A great way to change this is to prepare a healthy snack ahead of time.
8. Drink water before, during, and after drinking, as alcohol is a diuretic and can also cause dehydration. A glass of water for each serving of alcohol will help you replenish lost fluids.
9. Drink less alcohol. Not everyone likes to hear this, but it's better to drink less and be able to say no.
10. Take vitamins. Alcohol reduces the amount of nutrients in the body, and one must remember to replenish their supply in a timely manner.
