A scarecrow for burning, amulets for the house and children's paper crafts for the holiday.
How to make a Shrovetide doll from threads
What is needed
- Yellow yarn;
- red yarn;
- book or notebook;
- scissors;
- wooden skewer.
How to do
The thicker the yarn you choose, the more fluffy the doll will be. For the craft to look good, the red thread should be thinner than the yellow one. Of course, you can use materials of any other color.
Wind the yellow thread around the book. The height of the doll will depend on the width of the cover, and its thickness will depend on the number of turns. On average, it is enough to make 30-40 turns.
Cut the thread and remove the winding from the book.
Pass the end of the thread several times through the resulting skein and tighten with a knot - this will be the doll's head. Hide the loose end among other threads.
Holding the skein with a knot up, gently flatten it and rewind it tightly several times with a red thread, stepping back about 2 cm from the crown. Cut the thread, leaving a length of about 30 cm - this "tail" will still come in handy.
For the arms, make another skein of yellow yarn, the same as for the doll's body.
After stepping back about a centimeter from the edge, wind the red thread tightly around the skein to make a palm.
Pull the red thread along the skein and wind it on the other side, making a second palm. Cut off the tip, leaving a length of approximately 30 cm.
Insert the prepared hands into the doll's body and slide up to the very chest.
With the two remaining red "tails", wrap the doll tightly under your arms.
Wind red threads crosswise across your chest. Tie in a knot at the waist.
Cut the threads of your palms and skirts at the folds.
Trim the edges with scissors.
Insert a wooden skewer into the doll.

How to make a Shrovetide patchwork doll
What is needed
- Straw or paper tubes;
- three squares of white fabric;
- three rags of variegated fabric;
- trimming thin strips;
- pieces of lace;
- synthetic winterizer, cotton wool or newspaper;
- red threads;
- scissors.
How to do
Lay a few straws or two thin bundles of straw in a crisscross pattern and tie in the center with red threads to form a cross-shaped base. One side of it should be longer than the other three. Trim off any excess and trim the edges if necessary.
Roll a ball of padding polyester, cotton wool or newspaper. Take the base by the long end and put the ball on the opposite part, forming the head.
Wrap a white cloth over your head so that there are as few folds on your face as possible. Secure the fabric with red threads. The head must be firmly attached to the base.
Wrap a piece of white cloth around one arm. Tie the threads towards the end of the bar. Repeat with the other hand.
Wrap a strip of lace around the doll's neck and fold the ends neatly over the doll's chest, shaping the body.
Girdle the figurine with a piece of brightly colored cloth.
Wrap another one over the previous flap - so the outfit will turn out to be more magnificent. Tie the skirts at the waist with red thread so that the garment is held firmly.
Wrap a strip of lace around your waist to represent an apron. Tie a decorative ribbon on top with a bow.
Weave a thin straw wreath and put it on the doll's head, or simply decorate it with a ribbon.
Tie a bright scarf.
Decorate the doll's arms with ribbons, masking the red threads.

Another way to make a patchwork doll:
How to make a Shrovetide doll from bast
What is needed
- Bast (you can also use flexible dry grass or combed flax);
- red strong threads;
- bright flaps;
- narrow tape;
- scissors.
How to do
Divide the bast into two piles: larger (for the torso) and smaller (for the arms). Fold the hand portion in half and wrap red thread tightly around one end several times.
Braid the bast with a tight pigtail, threading a red thread between the strands, which was wrapped around one end. When you finish weaving, wrap the other edge with the same thread. Cut it off, leaving a margin of about 30 cm.
Fold the torso bap in half and form the head. To do this, step back 3-5 cm from the fold and wrap tightly with red thread. Cut the end, leaving a margin of 30 cm.
Divide the bast below the doll's neck into two parts and insert a braid representing hands between them. The pigtail should fit snugly around the neck, the arms should be the same length.
Fold together both "tails" of the red thread that you left from your hands and head, and wrap the doll under the chest and crosswise across the chest.
Wrap a piece of fabric around your waist to form a petticoat. Wrap the top with thread.
Measure out a rectangular patch of variegated fabric: length is the height of the doll, multiplied by two. Cut a hole in the center for the head and slide the cloth over the doll.
Tuck the dress neatly around your waist.
Place the apron on top with the right side away from you, as in the picture, and wrap the thread in several turns around the doll's waist, fixing the dress and apron. Lower it, masking the thread running underneath.
Decorate the doll's forehead with ribbon.
Fold the edge of the handkerchief inward. This will make it look neater.
Tie the head of the doll tightly with a scarf. Decorate her hands with ribbons if desired.

How to make a Shrovetide doll out of paper
What is needed
- Colored paper;
- White paper;
- scissors;
- glue;
- pencil;
- ruler;
- felt-tip pens.
How to do
Form two accordions from two A4 sheets of different colors and cut one so that it is about 5 cm shorter than the other.
Fold the accordions in half.
Glue the two central sides of a long accordion together to form a fan.
Apply glue along the entire length of the center sides of the short accordion. Glue the long one into it.
To make a scarf, cut one corner of an 8 x 8 cm colored paper square in a circle.
From a sheet of the same color, cut two identical ties for the scarf (freehand).
To make a blank for the face, cut a circle 6-7 cm in diameter out of white paper.
Hair can be drawn with a felt-tip pen, or made from orange or yellow paper.
Draw and cut out the palms.
If you made your hair out of paper, then stick it on your face. Attach it in turn to the center of the kerchief so that its corner is directed upward above the parting.
Glue the ties under the headscarf.
Draw the face. To make the doll look more fun, you can add orange freckles to it.
Lubricate the accordion with glue and attach the doll's head so that the top of the accordion roughly coincides with the middle of the head.
Glue your palms into the folds of the smaller accordion. Let the glue dry completely.

You can make a paper craft for Shrovetide like this:
How to make a stuffed carnival
What is needed
The Shrovetide effigy is made of wood, straw and other materials that are easy to set on fire. They deliberately dress him in old, shabby clothes. It is believed that such a symbol should not have a face, but this principle is not observed everywhere.
It is better to choose natural materials so that the stuffed animal does not emit a pungent smell while it is burning.
- Wood for the base: boards, thick branches or shovel cuttings;
- body materials: bags, unnecessary pillowcases or fabric blanks;
- filler: straw, paper, newspapers, rags;
- old clothes or different fabrics to imitate it;
- scissors;
- natural fiber rope or wire;
- hammer and nails (if you are nailing the base).
How to do
Assemble the base
Most often, the base of the stuffed animal looks like a cross: the head is placed on the upper part, the side bars become hands, and the bottom becomes the body. But you can also make a T-shaped frame or even assemble a composition on an ordinary vertical stick.
Fasten the boards or branches in any way convenient for you: nail them together or tie them with ropes.
Shape your body
There are several options for how to make a stuffed body. Here are the most common ones:
- Tie filled bags or pillowcases onto a wooden base.
- Put the clothes on the frame and stuff with filler, having previously tied the sleeves and hem.
- Tie armfuls of filler directly to the base.
- Sew the stuffed animal out of old sheets or other unnecessary fabric.
Hands can be made from brooms or bundles of straw by tying them to the side rails.
Make your head
The head can be sewn, but it is easier to use a linen bag or a square piece of light-colored fabric with the ends tied. Stuff it with straw and tie it to the base. For the head, you can take an old T-shirt, as in the picture:
Dress up stuffed animal
Dress the doll in a bright outfit and tie a scarf around her head. Under the scarf, you can fasten braids made of intertwined strips of yellow fabric, rope or straw. Decorate the stuffed animal with ribbons, beads, scarf. Draw a cheerful face if desired.
