Count how many fingers it took to visually connect the horizon and the sun. Each one counts in 15 minutes, and a whole hand takes about one hour. If there is still room under the little finger to the horizon, use the fingers of the other hand and continue counting.
Note that the calculation may vary depending on the geographic location. For example, in the tropics it gets dark faster, since the sun sets at a right angle, and in the north - vice versa. In addition, you need to take into account the terrain: mountains and trees in the forest can interfere with the penetration of sunlight.
