1. Mr. Peabody and the mermaid

  • USA, 1948.
  • Fantastic comedy.
  • Duration: 89 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 5.

Arthur Peabody, a middle-aged businessman from Boston, is suffering from a midlife crisis. On the advice of the doctor, he and his wife Polly go on vacation to a small tropical island in the Caribbean. There the hero decides to go fishing, but a very unexpected "catch" awaits him - the sea singer Leonor.

2. Amphibious man

  • USSR, 1961.
  • Fantastic melodrama.
  • Duration: 92 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 1.

The owner of the pearl artel Pedro Zurita intends to hunt down and catch the mysterious "sea devil". The latter actually turns out to be a young man named Ichthyander, who, thanks to his fantastic abilities, can swim underwater. One day Ichthyander saves a drowning girl Gutiere from death. This fleeting encounter changes the life of an amphibian forever.

Many directors dreamed of filming the science fiction novel by Alexander Belyaev, but the technical means of those years would not have allowed complex underwater filming. Nevertheless, the talented cameraman Eduard Rozovsky coped with this task. To do this, he had to come up with a number of devices. Among them were sealed underwater camera boxes and a special mesh lens attachment that "adds" live swimming fish to the frame.

3. The Little Mermaid

  • USSR, Bulgaria, 1976.
  • Fabulous drama.
  • Duration: 81 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 1.

The Little Mermaid falls in love with a prince, once rescued by her during a storm. In order to be with her beloved, the girl will have to sacrifice a lot: leave the sea kingdom forever and part with her beautiful hair.

The picture of the joint production of the USSR and Bulgaria based on the well-known fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen was released in 1976 and immediately won the audience's sympathy. The film does not exactly follow the plot of the original in everything: for example, the witch does not take the voice of the little mermaid, so the heroine still has the ability to speak.

4. Splash

  • USA, 1984.
  • Fantastic melodrama.
  • Duration: 105 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 2.

When a young New Yorker named Allan Bauer gets into trouble, a beautiful stranger rescues him. Allan falls in love with a girl, not realizing that she is a mermaid and they have already met.

Director Ron Howard produced a very atypical romantic comedy imbued with the spirit of the 80s. The main role was played by the still very young Tom Hanks. Prior to that, Michael Keaton, Chevy Chase, Dudley Moore, Bill Murray and John Travolta abandoned her. Hanks played in his usual soft, romantic and ironic manner. Immediately after the release of the film on the screens, the career of the actor, who had previously been filmed only in low-budget projects, took off sharply.

5. Mermaids

  • USA, Ireland, 1990.
  • Comedy melodrama.
  • Duration: 110 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 7.

Single mother Rachel Flax often changes boyfriends, which greatly upsets her devout eldest daughter Charlotte. Because of this, constant disagreements arise between relatives. However, everything changes when Rachel has a new fan named Lou.

Although in the film directed by Richard Benjamin, there are no sea maidens in the literal sense (one of the heroines only disguises as a mermaid), he perfectly reveals the difficult topic of growing up and responsibility. And there is also a great cast: singer Cher, Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci, for whom this role became her debut in a big movie.

6. Undine

  • USA, Ireland, 2009.
  • Fantasy drama.
  • Duration: 111 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 8.

One day, a lonely fisherman Syracuse finds an unusual girl in the nets who does not remember anything about her past. Meanwhile, the hero's daughter Annie is sure that the stranger is a real mermaid and brings good luck and happiness.

The director of the famous film "Interview with the Vampire" Neil Jordan once again makes the mythological amazing creature the center of the narrative. Also, the picture is worth attention because of the leading actor - the charismatic Colin Farrell.

7. The Mystery of the Suzhou River

  • Germany, China, France, 2000.
  • Melodrama.
  • Duration: 83 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 4.

A few years after the girl under mysterious circumstances disappears without a trace, drowning in the river, the hero meets Meimei, who resembles Moudan like two drops of water.

8. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

  • USA, 2011.
  • Adventure comedy.
  • Duration: 136 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 6.

In the fourth movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Jack Sparrow and his rivals are looking for a mysterious source of eternal youth. Of course, they get into a lot of trouble along the way.

Like the rest of the films in the series, Rob Marshall's tape based on the novel by Tim Powers is imbued with the spirit of adventure and romance. A special highlight of "On Stranger Tides" are the mermaids, who did not appear in the previous parts.

9. Daughters of Dance

  • Poland, 2015.
  • Musical, comedy drama, horror.
  • Duration: 92 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 3.

Two carnivorous mermaid sisters Zlata and Srebra get a job as singers in a nightclub. Problems begin when the second girl falls in love with the rock musician Mitek.

The very bizarre and quirky Polish horror comedy Daughters of the Dance was conceived as a darker and more unbridled version of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. And at least visually, the work of novice director Agnieszka Smoczynski can be considered quite successful.

10. Shape of water

  • USA, 2017.
  • Fantastic drama.
  • Duration: 123 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 3.

A dumb woman named Eliza works as a cleaner at a secret military research facility. One day, a recently captured amphibian man is brought to the laboratory. Eliza falls in love with a prisoner and decides to free him from the clutches of the government.

Guillermo del Toro's Oscar-winning The Shape of Water has received almost unanimous critical acclaim. This tape tells that pure and true love is able to resist any evil. Even if sometimes it takes not the most familiar forms.
