Is perfectionism really a desire to do everything at its best? Or are there other motives behind it? Posted by Jonas Ellison on his Medium blog, he shared his thoughts on what really lies behind the desire to perfect everything.
How often do you say to yourself: "I'm not ready to demonstrate the work, because it is far from perfect" or "Yes, this is cool, but I need to get to know it better"?
According to Jonas Ellison, at times like these, an unhealthy perfectionism wakes up in you, which kills creativity. You end up leaving the project because it wasn't perfect enough.
You are working to make it even better. And then another. And so on ad infinitum, until you realize that you are moving away from the truth.
But what is really behind perfectionism? The author compares the desire to endlessly improve something with cowardice.
Perfectionism pretends to be complex and highly intelligent, but in reality it is a manifestation of cowardice. We hide a banal fear behind a mask of snobbery. As a result, high expectations make us feel insignificant and suppress creativity.
According to Elliot, mistakes and imperfections make people people, not robots. It is they who stimulate creativity and move work forward.
Mistakes and imperfections are all behind real art. This is what drives the work. And it makes us human - the creators of beautiful imperfections.
