How to deal with folds on things of a complex cut and smooth out delicate fabrics - even those for which contact with the iron is strictly contraindicated.
How to prepare the place for ironing
Virtuosos can get perfect results on a table covered with a blanket, but it's better to have an ironing board. Right-handers need to install it with the rounded end to the left, left-handers, respectively, to the right. The light should fall on the workplace from the side of the less active hand, the cord should freely follow the iron and not interfere with the ironer.
It is good to have gauze or a special cloth for ironing, a container of water on hand. As a rule, modern irons are equipped with sprinklers, but a spray bottle will help moisturize the item much faster.
How to iron clothes
Shirts
For a good result, the shirt should not be dry. Sprinkle it with water from a spray bottle before ironing.
The shirt is ironed from the collar. Iron it on the inside, then on the outside. The next step is the cuffs. They should be unfastened and straightened on an ironing board, then ironed thoroughly. Then move on to the sleeves. There should be no arrows on them. In order not to accidentally iron them, iron only in the middle of the sleeve, avoiding places where the fabric is folded.
The floors and the back of the shirt are ironed last. Pay special attention to the area where the loops are knocked out - after fastening the buttons, it will be on top.
Pants
Turn the pants inside out, smooth out the seams and pockets. Further manipulations are carried out on the front side. Use damp gauze to prevent shiny areas from appearing on the legs. It will dry quickly from the heat of the iron, so keep a container of water handy.
Place one leg on the board, cover with gauze and iron from bottom to top.
Make sure that no creases are formed in the process, it will not be easy to get rid of them.
Then take up the top of the trousers, for convenience, they can be pulled over the rounded edge of the board. Pay special attention to waist folds, if any.
The last step is smoothing the arrows. Align the side seams of the legs and gently iron the folds of the fabric through cheesecloth. This activity requires concentration, as a sloppy arrow looks more sloppy than its absence.
Blazers
Due to the many seams and details, it is also best to iron a jacket or jacket through gauze to prevent the fabric from becoming shiny. Iron the sleeves first, then tackle the shoulders. To make it easier, you can use a roll made of tightly rolled towels. Place it in the sleeve to flatten the arrowhead and under the shoulder to iron the seams.
The back and shelf are also ironed from the front side through gauze. There should be no problems with the jacket, and the jacket will require special attention due to the darts on the chest. Make sure that no folds form on the shelves unless the designer has foreseen them. The collar and lapels remain for a snack. To make ironing easier, stretch the fabric slightly with your hands during the process.
Knitwear
Knitwear should be treated with care even during the drying process. It is better to dry things made of this material flat on a horizontal surface: then, perhaps, they will not have to be ironed. If the knitwear still needs ironing, moisten the garment with water and steam gently. You do not need to actively drive the iron, just apply the hot sole of the device to each area of the garment and hold in this position for a few seconds. This will prevent the jersey from warping.
Delicate things
It is better to iron products made of thin fabric from the inside out at the lowest temperature conditions. First, try ironing out the part of the thing that is not in sight: this way you will understand how the fabric will behave after contact with a hot surface. You can also save a piece of fabric that is often sewn onto the garment and practice ironing delicate fabric on it.

Fitted sheets
Ironing a sheet with an elastic around the perimeter is not a test for the faint of heart. It is not clear how to fold it and place it on the ironing board.
You can iron the sheet just before use. Pull it over the mattress and iron it over. If the issue of storing ironed bed linen is fundamental, you can iron the sheet on the mattress, then gently roll it up. Fold it in half and tuck one corner into the other on each side, then in half again so that all corners are aligned. Flatten the resulting rectangle on the table and fold like a traditional sheet.
Duvet covers
Fold the duvet cover in four. Iron on one side, turn over and repeat. Unfold the duvet cover and fold it back so that the non-ironed sides are outside. Iron on both sides again. Repeat until the entire fabric is flattened.
Silk bed linen
It is better to iron silk from the inside out so as not to damage delicate fabrics. Be sure to save the labels on which it is written what temperature regime for ironing the manufacturer recommends to use for the product, and strictly follow these tips.
It is not recommended to spray silk linen with water during ironing: streaks may remain.
If there is a need to moisten a thing, it is better to sprinkle it from a spray bottle and put it in a plastic bag for an hour. So the product is evenly saturated with moisture.
Tablecloths
Iron the edge first, then move to the center section. If the product is very dry, spray it with a spray bottle and roll it up so that it is evenly moistened. For cotton and linen tablecloths, use hot water, the fabric absorbs better.
Curtains
Curtains should be ironed while still damp. Start ironing the curtain from top to bottom. When the top of the ironing board is almost down to the floor, hang the curtain over the curtain rod. Continue ironing the bottom, spreading it out on the board. This will avoid creases and contamination of the fabric. Lambrequins are also ironed wet.
For synthetic fabrics, there is a life hack that will allow you to do without an iron at all. Hang wet curtains on the cornice - they will smooth out under their own weight.
How to iron things that should not be ironed
If the label on the item clearly prohibits the contact of the fabric with the iron, but the folds and creases need to be smoothed out somehow, there are two ways to solve the problem.
1. Ironing "with obstacles"
You will need four thick napkins. Moisten two of them. Fold the "sandwich": wet cloth, dry, then wrinkled item, then dry cloth and wet again. Iron the structure with a weakly heated iron.
2. Steaming
Hang the product on a hanger or lay it out on a board. Bring the iron to the fabric, but do not touch it with a hot surface. Check the appliance in advance: together with the steam, it may start spewing out pieces of rust. Press the button on the steamer until the garment is slightly damp. Then let it cool and dry.
