Review of Amazfit GTR 2 - the best smart watches from Huami

Huami was once known only as a manufacturer of Mi Bands for Xiaomi, but today it is a big brand in the smartwatch market. As part of the Amazfit series, she has already launched a dozen attractive accessories. Basically, these are budget devices that delight with the price-performance ratio. However, there are also flagship positioning models in the lineup. These include the GTS 2 watch, which we have already met, and the GTR 2 - we'll talk about them today.

The Amazfit GTR 2 watch is available in two versions: Sport and Classic. The former has a black brushed aluminum body, while the latter, which we tested, has a high-gloss steel finish. Their dimensions are absolutely identical, the screen diagonal is 1.39 inches. Technically, the models are also no different from each other, so when choosing, you should focus solely on the appearance.

The Classic model fully lives up to its name: it is perfect for those who are looking for an accessory to match a classic shirt. The glossy steel case looks stylish, rigorous and impressive at the same time.

The entire front panel is covered with tempered glass, rounded at the edges. Minute and hour marks are applied directly to its surface. For two weeks of using the gadget, not one of the divisions has been erased, and I want to believe that this will continue.

On the right, the Amazfit GTR 2 has two buttons. One of them opens the main menu, and the other starts the training mode. The latter can be reassigned by choosing to go to music or compass, start a countdown, or something else.

On the other side of the case, covered with plastic, you can see the sensors and a two-pin connector for charging. Along the edges there are holes for the microphone and speaker.

While the Sport model has a silicone strap, the Classic version has a coarse leather strap. The buckle is metal, there are also two trainers. If kinks occur, the strap can be easily replaced with any strap with a 22mm clip.

Screen

The watch received a round AMOLED display with a diagonal of 1.39 inches and a resolution of 454 × 454 pixels. It has narrow bezels around the edges that are completely invisible in everyday use. This is facilitated by dials and menus with a black background.

The display has a decent oleophobic coating that minimizes fingerprints and smudges on the glass. And those traces that still remain are very easily removed with a handkerchief or napkin.

The brightness margin of the screen is large, and due to the light sensor, it can be adjusted automatically. Readability will be good even in very bright sun. In short, the screen is top-notch here.

In the settings, you can activate the "Always on Display" option, which allows you to display the time on the screen 24/7. Moreover, you can choose a digital, analog or classic dial. The latter is based on your standard watch face and leaves the hands, numbers, or date behind.

Functions

In terms of its capabilities, the Amazfit GTR 2 is identical to the GTS 2. You can also receive calls from them without taking your smartphone out of your pocket. In a noisy street, it is not very convenient to speak at hours, but in the car or at home at work - quite for yourself.

You can control music from your smartphone and play tracks from the watch's memory. This, of course, is not a killer feature, but Amazfit GTR 2 paired with Bluetooth headphones can act as a player.

Despite the strict classic design, the watch is in no way inferior to its analogues in sports functions. There are 12 modes for different types of activity, constant monitoring of pulse and sleep quality, assessment of stress levels, measurement of oxygen in the blood (SpO2) and analysis of PAI activity. The gadget supports GPS: you can record the routes of your runs.

It is very convenient to read text notifications on the watch. You don't need to look closely to make out small characters. Alerts can come with vibration or beep, which can also be useful.

In general, the interface is absolutely standard for Amazfit gadgets. To go to notifications, you just need to swipe up from the dial, swipe down opens the quick settings curtain, and swiping to the right and left changes the main watch cards with indicators of physical activity, weather and other data.

The GTR 2 has no problems with scrolling and animation. Everything works smoothly and without overlap of some symbols on others. The only thing you can find fault with is a slight delay in activating the screen when you raise your wrist, if the corresponding option is enabled.

Application

The Zepp app is used to pair with smartphones. All statistics on activity and sleep, heart rate and SpO2 measurements, PAI and target tracking are available on its main screen. On the tab with the unfortunate localized name "Enjoy", you can set alarms, create reminders, connect notifications, set up vibration, and so on. Almost all of the same functions are available in a more convenient and concise menu, which can be accessed from the third tab by selecting the connected clock on it.

A watch face shop is also available at Zepp. All of them are free, but the choice is not that wide - there are about 50 options. Many of them do not want to be installed on such cool-looking watches at all.

Amazfit GTR 2 allows you to create a vibration pattern for each type of notification. Choose to alternate between long and short beeps for calls, messages, or warm-up reminders to understand the type of notification without looking at the screen.

Autonomy

The watch received a 471 mAh battery, which is very good. The manufacturer claimed 14 days of battery life in normal use and more than 30 days in "Time Only" mode without connecting to a smartphone, measuring heart rate and other smart functions.

Previous reviews of Amazfit gadgets have shown that the company's promises can be trusted: Huami never overstates its deadlines. Therefore, we decided to immediately load GTR 2: we turned on the automatic activation of the screen when raising the wrist, measuring the heart rate every 30 minutes and the Always on Display day mode with the display of the time on the screen from 8:00 to 22:00. So the clock worked for almost a full seven days. This is a great result.

A two-pin magnetic connector on the back of the device is used for charging. There is no adapter in the box, but any other with USB will do. It will take a little less than 2 hours to replenish 100% of the charge.

Outcomes

In terms of design and materials, the GTR 2 Classic is truly a flagship model. The watch costs about 15 thousand rubles, but it looks more expensive. In this regard, the gadget is definitely not inferior to counterparts from Huawei and Samsung.

In terms of characteristics and basic functions, everything is also excellent: there is a gorgeous screen, decent autonomy, receiving calls from a smartphone and even a built-in music player.

This is all really cool, but there are two things that make the GTR 2 unable to fully compete with the Galaxy Watch or its Wear OS counterparts. It's about the absence of contactless payments and the ability to install additional applications. Because of this, the Amazfit watch can only compete with the Huawei Watch, which also lacks both.

On the other hand, is it worth scolding the GTR 2 for this at a price of 15 thousand rubles? Yes, for Amazfit the amount is rather big, but it doesn't seem too high. For the money, there is no watch without the shortcomings of the GTR 2.

You can buy Amazfit GTR 2 Classic on AliExpress, in Citylink or Svyaznoy.
