Psychologist Eddie Harmon-Jones and his colleagues have been asking this question for seven years. They concluded that creativity is influenced not by emotional color (positive and negative emotions), but by motivational efficiency (the term was coined by the researchers), that is, how emotion affects the desire to work. For example, having fun is a positive emotion, but it has low motivational effectiveness. But desire is a positive emotion with high motivational efficiency.

It was possible to prove the relevance of the theory with the help of. The participants were divided into two groups. The first was shown a video with funny cats (low motivational efficiency), the second - a video with attractive-looking desserts (high motivational efficiency).

Despite the fact that both groups experienced positive emotions, the participants of the second group approached the solution of subsequent problems more creatively.

The same goes for videos that evoke negative emotions. Sadness (low motivational efficiency) made it difficult to focus, disgust (high motivational efficiency) - on the contrary.

The researchers concluded that motivational efficiency is more conducive to creativity than emotion itself. This is due to the fact that emotions with low motivational efficiency force us to pursue new goals, and those with high ones help to focus on the current goal.
