The fact that no one knows about them except you does not make them trifling.
Why promises you make to yourself should be taken seriously
1. One broken promise provokes another. When you realize that you have violated your given word to yourself, it torments you, torments you at a subconscious level and takes away energy. Discomfort, anxiety and guilt arise. And these feelings ultimately greatly reduce the chances that you will fulfill the promise next time.
2. Broken promises undermine your confidence in yourself. When you give someone your word but don't hold back, you disappoint and undermine that person's trust. And you are depressed by the thought that you have let someone down.
When you do not fulfill the promise made to yourself, then on a subconscious level you experience the feelings of both the guilty and the victim. To regain confidence in yourself, keep your word.
3. You are depriving yourself of the opportunity to become better. You hardly promise yourself to start smoking, eat more fast food and read as few books as possible. Most likely, your promises are still positive. And when you stop doing them, you put yourself on the sidelines: make excuses, look for excuses to do the "more important" things, and gradually forget about positive intentions.
4. A string of broken promises can affect self-esteem. And not for the better. And the blame for everything is constant shame and disappointment due to the fact that you broke your own word.
Keeping promises, on the other hand, motivates and sets you up for success.
For example, you promised yourself to eat right and lose three kilograms in a month and did it. As a result, you are satisfied with yourself, satisfied and feel self-worth. And this has a positive effect on motivation in general.
Keeping promises made to yourself
1. Don't promise what you can't do. Be selective and set realistic and deliberate goals for yourself. If from the very beginning you doubt that you can cope, it is better to postpone the venture and switch to what you can change right now. At the same time, think about what exactly prevents you from implementing your plans and why you do not believe in a positive result.
2. Think about what you need to keep your promise. Prepare a plan: where and when you will start, how much time you are really willing to devote, what can help or hinder you. Write down everything that you consider necessary and useful, focusing on a specific task.
3. Set a deadline in your calendar until which you intend to keep your word, and follow it. This will help you understand how realistic and achievable the goal is, taking into account your other obligations.
4. Move from general to specific. For example, if the global promise is to take part in a marathon in the summer, start running in the morning, sign up for the appropriate section and undergo a medical examination to make sure that your health will allow you to reach your ultimate goal without harm to your body.
5. Don't overuse multitasking. Separate the important from the urgent, and do not forget about points two and three. If it doesn't work out, pick up a time management technique and learn how to organize your time. Try the Pomodoro technique, implement the Pareto principle, or find another way that suits you not to forget about the main thing - about yourself and your promises.
