Do not trust films, they are very far from reality. Unless, of course, this is a documentary on Discovery.

1. The pin of a grenade can be pulled out with your teeth

Before throwing a grenade, the cool heroes of the films pull out the pin with their teeth. This is what Clarence Boddicker did in Robocop, Ray Farrier in War of the Worlds, Dizzy Flores from Starship Troopers, Casey Bracket from the Predator remake … We clench our jaws tighter, tug slightly, and the grenade is ready to detonate. At least that's what the militants say.

What really is. You can't just pull the ring out of the grenade: first you need to unbend the metal "antennae" on the other side of the ring with your hand. Without this, even a very strong jerk will not move the pin. So, if you are not a terminator with a steel jaw on a hydraulic drive, trying to pry the ring out of a grenade with your teeth will lead to the loss of these very teeth.

2. Silencers make the shot silent

If in the film a silencer is screwed onto the killer's pistol, you can be sure that no one will hear the shot, even if they are standing right around the corner. Let the gunfight take place in an area full of bystanders, such as a subway station (John Wick II), the shots will not get the slightest attention.

In especially advanced cases, the killer can do without a silencer. We take a bottle, put more paper napkins in it (like in the movie "The Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg), and the sniper rifle fires with a sound comparable in volume to the clicking of fingers.

What really is. The silencer makes the shot quieter, but not so much that it cannot be heard. In reality, the silent firing device is intended rather to protect the shooter's hearing, and not to hide the fact of the shot.

To make shooting really quiet, you need special and subsonic cartridges. Simply screwing the silencer onto a regular pistol will not produce a silent shot. Compare for yourself how different shots from weapons with PBS and without it differ.

3. Defibrillator triggers a stopped heart

In films, a defibrillator is a magical object that can revive even a person whose heart has stopped. Sometimes, however, it turns out not on the first try, but on the second or third, but in the end it always works.

What really is. The defibrillator cannot start a stopped heart. This device is used to restore a normal heart rate when the heart is beating, but does it wrong. If you give an electric shock to a person with a stopped heart, then simply finish him off definitively. Defibrillation in the movies: a missed opportunity for public health education.

4. Heart injection will revive anyone

The hero is in critical condition, something urgently needs to be done, but there is no magic defibrillator at hand. Solution? An injection of medicine into the heart! The films "Pulp Fiction" and "The Rock" clearly demonstrate this method of treatment.

What really is. In modern medicine, there is such a thing as intracardiac injection, but it is practically not used. There are safer, although less effective, ways to deliver the drug to the body. Inserting a needle into the heart will leave a hole in it and lead Hollywood medical myth part 2: Injecting medication straight into the heart is beneficial to severe internal bleeding that can be fatal. Even if such a trick is worth doing, it is only on the operating table, and not in artisanal conditions.

5. A bullet can easily knock down the lock

The padlock is no barrier for tough guys with guns. One shot from a pistol from a distance of a meter, and the bow shatters to smithereens. No keys are needed, no long fiddling with master keys.

What really is. Shooting a castle with a pistol is not only useless, but also dangerous: the bullet will not do much damage to the bow, but it will ricochet and, quite possibly, kill the shooter. In reality, to knock locks and doors, police special forces use shotguns loaded with special cartridges with loose powder instead of hard shot. Plus, before that, they put on body armor and face protection.

You can watch how the host of the video blog Demolition Ranch tries to shoot the padlock with various types of weapons (albeit not at close range, but from a safe distance). Experience has shown that pistols cannot cope: a Barrett M82 sniper rifle was needed to ensure the destruction of the castle.

6. Ventilation is the path to salvation

In movies, ventilation is a convenient way to quickly and discreetly get to where you want to go. It is clean and there is enough space for an adult large man to fit into the mine entirely and crawl briskly, hiding from pursuit or, on the contrary, preparing to ambush the villains. And sometimes the ventilation may not hide a noble avenger like John McClane or Ethan Hunt, but an ominous alien creature two meters long, as in the movie "Alien".

What really is. The ventilation pipes are not big enough to put a person in there - at least, so that he retains the ability to move. In addition, inside they are blocked by dampers and valves, and the outlets from the air ducts rest against grilles or air conditioners. The ventilation is also quite dirty and dusty.

As for the large vertical ventilation shafts (which run from the roof of the building), they can only be climbed with certain equipment. But this method of penetration into the forbidden territory cannot be exactly named.

7. Cars explode at every opportunity

If you shoot a car, crash it into something, or drop it off a cliff, it will explode. And at the same time, other cars parked nearby can blow up. Obviously, in the movies, instead of gasoline, cars are fueled with nitroglycerin.

What really is. Gasoline itself is not explosive - its vapors are explosive. And car designers specifically design gas tanks in such a way that they do not accumulate there. So a gas tank explosion is pretty rare.

And setting fire to fuel with a shot is not a trivial task. Regular bullets will not work - you will need incendiary or tracer rounds. The shot car will start burning, but a spectacular explosion will not happen. And even with a simple collision, it will not be even more so.

8. Arrows are not as scary as bullets

According to filmmakers, arrows and bullets work in different ways. If a shot in the chest from a pistol is fatal, then an arrow from a bow that hits the same place will not knock the hero down. The brave warrior will continue to fight and only after the third or fourth projectile will he fall, deliver a touching farewell speech to the saddened comrades and peacefully retreat to Valhalla.

What really is. After a bullet wound, you can still, if you're lucky, maintain some mobility. But the arrow is different. She is more than a bullet. An arrow stuck in a wound causes severe pain and continues to injure you when moving, you don't run around with it much. So in some ways it is more dangerous than Arrow Wounds and Treatments on the Western Frontier … a fatality greater then that produced by any other weapon than a bullet - unless we're talking about explosive ordnance, of course.

9. The shot throws the person back

When action heroes shoot their enemies with a shotgun, the victim is thrown back as if at least a cannonball had landed at her. It looked especially funny in The Terminator, when Kyle Reese's shot threw a hundred-kilogram cyborg so that he flew out of the bar onto the street.

What really is. Knowledge of Newton's third law suggests that a weapon capable of throwing a target several meters with its shot will have the same effect on the shooter. The recoil from such a shotgun, if it existed, would hurl the wearer the same distance as the victim, only in the opposite direction.

In reality, bullets, despite their high kinetic energy, have an extremely small contact area. And even if the shot is very powerful, the projectile will pierce the victim through, but it will definitely not be able to throw it back.

10. Piranhas are deadly

Piranhas are common monsters in horror films. They are much more dangerous than sharks, although they are smaller in size. These fish attack in huge schools and gnaw their victims to the bone in a matter of seconds. And if some villain throws you into his pool with piranhas living there, you will not be saved. The film "You Only Live Twice" confirms this.

What really is. There have been no cases of people killing by piranhas in the world, although a very hungry predatory fish can bite a person. And in general, their bloodthirstiness is greatly exaggerated: they are more inclined to eat carrion, but not living people. See how the owner of a pond with piranhas demonstrates by his own example their reaction (more precisely, its absence) to a person.

11. Chloroform works instantly

According to filmmakers, chloroform is a kind of magical liquid that is enough to inhale once to reliably shut down for several hours. It is used by killers and criminals to quickly and quietly knock out their victims and kidnap them.

What really is. In order for a person to lose consciousness, he needs to inhale chloroform for about five minutes (and all this time he will actively resist). In addition, he will have to support his chin, otherwise the tongue may block the airways. And chloroform can throw up.

So the perpetrator will need the victim's complete obedience, enough time, and the skills of an anesthesiologist. If you stop feeding chloroform, the person will quickly come to his senses.

12. A blow to the head is a trifle

The hero gets a hard blow on the head with a fist, a club, the butt of a pistol or even a car bumper and loses consciousness. He comes to himself after a long time, being captured by the villain. But nothing prevents him from breaking free and running away!

What really is. It is impossible to disable a person with a blow so that he wakes up without consequences. If he did not come to his senses quickly, it means that he suffered a serious injury Concussion (Traumatic Brain Injury), concussion or hemorrhage of Subdural hematoma in the brain. And even if the victim wakes up, he will still experience nausea, disorientation and dizziness. There is no talk of any battles with enemies - here it would just be to survive.
