A modern teacher does not say "Have you forgotten your head at home?" or "Forest of hands!" and even less does it overload the students with cramming "from now until now." Instead, he motivates the wards to gain knowledge, and he himself studies all the time. Together with "" we asked experienced mentors what a really cool teacher knows and can do.

What should be a teacher in the XXI century: teachers themselves answer
What should be a teacher in the XXI century: teachers themselves answer

1. Owns modern technology

Pupils today rarely part with gadgets, and a mentor who does not know how to use a smartphone or does not know how to go online is unlikely to be able to speak the same language with them. A teacher who is friendly with technology can prepare vivid presentations, conduct virtual tours and shoot instructional videos. And he is also able to turn the love of the wards to gadgets to the benefit of the cause - for example, by talking about cool educational applications and services.

With the advent of new technologies, education has become more interesting and diversified. You can connect to distance classes from anywhere in the world, recording a lesson allows you to repeat the material, and online tests and simulators help to further consolidate your knowledge. However, I believe that distance learning will not completely replace offline classes. The development of some skills requires a personal presence - for example, soft skills are difficult to develop without live communication.

2. Knows how to engage in dialogue with students

The modern teacher often asks the students questions to motivate them to reason, and knows how to listen to the answers. Even if the student is wrong, the mentor will not criticize or ridicule him, because such a reaction can discourage any desire to learn something new. Instead, the teacher will be able to reasonably explain what the person is wrong about.

During my work as a teacher, I realized that there are always students in the classroom who are interested, and those who came just for show. The secret is to find the eyes of the guys who are really interested and tell them, and gradually the rest are drawn in.

3. Constantly learns

The world is developing rapidly, therefore one of the important skills of a modern person is the ability to master new things throughout life. This is necessary for both students and teachers. The ability to use gadgets and apply modern technical solutions and non-standard techniques in the classroom helps mentors to win the attention and trust of the wards.

Technology does not stand still - you feel it especially well in IT. To be in trend, you have to keep learning yourself. For example, I went through the team lead school at Rostelecom IT - it gave me a lot of new knowledge, which I already apply in practice. Recently I finished the course on artificial intelligence. This topic is not directly related to my work, but I wanted to dive deeper into it and study the issue in detail.

Previously, it was impossible to imagine that teachers would use virtual reality technologies and 3D printers in the classroom. The format of exams has also changed, and after all 25 years ago no one heard of the Unified State Exam.

Video surveillance of the unified state exam is one of the important projects "". Thanks to its implementation, the USE procedure became more transparent and provided equal conditions for all participants. This year, Rostelecom has more than 109,000 video cameras at examination sites throughout the country, and a machine vision system helped to monitor compliance with the rules - a special technology in real time analyzed student behavior and recorded suspicious activity.

4. Knows how to find an approach to the student

All children assimilate information in different ways. For some, it is enough to read the rule from the textbook, while others will quickly understand the material provided with illustrations. If the teacher uses different formats for presenting information, he can make the lesson fun for the whole class.

You should try to communicate with students as equals and perceive them as colleagues. Who knows, suddenly one day they, too, will be in the teacher's place, and he will be in the student's place. Respectful relationships are the key to healthy communication and successful completion of any course. The rule of enthusiasm has always worked for me: if the teacher himself is burning with what he is doing, and does not give book knowledge, but experience proven "in battle", students will definitely be interested with him.

If the student does not master the subject, the teacher will try to understand why. After all, the reasons can be different - from gaps in knowledge to lack of motivation. A good teacher knows the level of each student and will be able to choose an individual task so that he can cope with the material.

5. Motivates to gain knowledge

It is important for the teacher to encourage students' curiosity and critical thinking, rather than forcing them to mechanically memorize the rules. An experienced teacher does not allow students to use cheat sheets for their own good - after all, cheating can turn into a bad habit that kills the desire to work. Instead of cramming, the teacher can give students creative tasks, the answers to which cannot be found quickly on the Internet.

I am against cheating. This may indicate that a person is not interested in the subject, the main thing is to get an assessment at any cost. The teacher's task is to explain why it is important to gain knowledge. For example, I teach Ruby on Rails development. Here it will not be possible to write off or ask to do it for you - in further work such a specialist will not cope with his duties, and he will simply be fired.

A teacher is a person who, in his own experience, has filled a lot of bumps, so you can ask him for help in mastering the material if you can't figure it out on your own. A good teacher takes an individual approach and knows how to convey this or that information to everyone. In addition, the mentor is able to motivate students to master the material - if the teacher succeeds, then they can too!

The teacher comes to the aid of "" with the project "", which provides video surveillance of the unified state exam. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate their real-world knowledge. And those of them who have not acquired the habit of rewriting other people's work will only be glad of this.

6. Has a wide range of interests

School subjects are not isolated from each other. For example, knowledge of history will help a literature teacher to immerse students in context and tell what events influenced the lives of the characters in the work. And a biologist who knows geography well will be able to explain how animals settled around the planet.

A teacher must love his job in order to perform it efficiently and professionally. But without the ability to rely on something else in life besides work and family, it will be difficult. It's like a two-legged stool - it won't be stable. And if you add a third support, the structure will become reliable. Therefore, it is important for any professional to have a hobby. This not only makes it possible to unload, but also becomes another bridge to the students, which will allow them to find a common language.

Children are more interested in listening to a person who can explain the topic with examples from life. Hardly any of the students in response to the question "Why should I learn English?" the replica "You grow up - you will understand" is enough. But the story of how knowledge of the language helped to find a way in a strange city sounds convincing.

The teacher needs to switch to other activities, hobbies, hobbies in order to broaden his horizons and not burn out from work. I would put sports first. I do jogging, swimming, crossfit - training allows me to unload my head and keep myself in good shape. I used to go to social dances - it helped me to better understand people and their behavior, which is very important in learning.

7. Capable of making even a boring topic addictive

A good teacher is also a great storyteller. Instead of reproducing monotonously the text of the textbook, he can spice up the material with a bright quote, a joke, or a visual and understandable example.

It is better to dilute the theory with interesting stories from your experience. Tell us about the real problems you faced, how you dealt with them or failed.

A professional in his field is fluent in oratory: he does not whisper or jabber over material, maintains contact with the audience and uses gestures and facial expressions. Today, information is available more than ever, so it is important not only to retell the material to students, but to teach them to analyze it.

Students can now focus their attention for 15–20 seconds. If during this time I did not manage to interest them in the discussion, they will be distracted, therefore, interactive is necessary in the lessons. This approach works even in purely academic subjects. For example, you might write two answers on the chalkboard and ask students to choose the correct one based on what they heard earlier.

8. Continuously improving the training program

It is important for a true professional that the material that his students will study is interesting and understandable to them. Boring examples are unlikely to catch the attention of students, let alone stick to memory.

Comparing my experience of lecturing 10 years ago in university classrooms and teaching through Zoom, I understand that thanks to modern technology, online education is in no way inferior to traditional offline learning. This is facilitated by fast video communication, and a large set of tools for communication and collaboration with students: Miro, Google Docs, various platforms for tracking student progress, conducting surveys and tests.

To interest the students, the teacher can add gaming technologies to the lectures - for example, offer students to solve a problem for speed and send an answer to the messenger. Children still do not part with gadgets and will definitely appreciate that the teacher also uses them. And on the Internet you can find illustrations, tables, videos and other useful content on the subject, which will complement the lesson and make it lively and interesting.
