Best travel soundtracks from movies

1. Easy Rider: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack / Deluxe Edition

  • USA, 1969.
  • Total length of the soundtrack: 104 minutes.
  • Number of tracks: 29.

Two bikers, Wyatt and Billy, travel the southern states of the United States in search of freedom. During their trip, friends get to know different people: a simple farmer, young hippies and a philosophizing lawyer George.

Not only was the film itself very innovative for its time (it is believed that it was “Easy Rider” that laid the foundation for the road-movie genre), but also the soundtrack to it was the first to be published on a separate disc. Prior to that, only the original soundtrack, written for a particular picture, was honored with such an honor. The director of the film Dennis Hopper made a selection of compositions from radio hits of the 60s: The Band, The Byrds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Steppenwolf.

4. The Darjeeling Limited: Original Soundtrack

  • USA, 2007.
  • Total soundtrack length: 56 minutes.
  • Number of tracks: 22.

Three not very friendly brothers, after a long separation, find themselves on a train going through the whole of India to the city of Darjeeling. They bring each other to white heat, in between times getting into trouble and adventure.

Wes Anderson became famous primarily for his extraordinary visual style, but his non-trivial musical taste is no less worthy of attention. For example, before filming "Train to Darjeeling," the director sent his supervisor Randall Poster to exotic Calcutta. He had to agree on the use of melodies composed by the legendary Indian composer Satyajit Rai. Moreover, the director chose Joe Dassin's Les Champs-Elysées (a testament to Anderson's love for France) and the perky tracks of the English rock band The Kinks.

9. Baby Driver: Music from the Motion Picture

  • UK, USA, 2017.
  • Total length of the soundtrack: 102 minutes.
  • Number of tracks: 30.

In this film about a young driver who works for a crime boss, the style of director Edgar Wright is immediately noticeable: the musical arrangement here becomes an important part of the plot. As events unfold, viewers will learn that as a child, the hero had an accident, his parents died, and the boy himself earned ringing in his ears for life, which had to be muffled by the loud music of Queen, T. Rex, The Beach Boys, Blur. Of course, the playlist of the protagonist can and should be borrowed for a long trip: it will definitely turn out excellent.

10. Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

  • USA, 2019.
  • Total duration of the soundtrack: 75 minutes.
  • Number of tracks: 31.

Quentin Tarantino is very careful about collecting music tracks for his films, and "Once Upon a Time in … Hollywood" was no exception. Thanks to the soundtrack, the viewer is immersed as much as possible in the atmosphere of the late 60s. Recall that the film is about the actor Rick Dalton, who is trying to save his fading career. Meanwhile, his stunt double and friend Cliff Booth meets a girl from Charles Manson's "Family" while aspiring actress Sharon Tate enjoys the first rays of fame.

Moreover, the director chose far from the most obvious compositions: for example, instead of the original of the cult song California Dreamin, a not very well-known cover is played here.

2. I Am Not Okay With This: Music from the Netflix Original Series

  • USA, 2020 - present.
  • Total soundtrack length: 39 minutes.
  • Number of tracks: 11.

Schoolgirl Sydney suddenly discovers her telekinesis ability. In parallel, the heroine meets a new friend Stanley, who teaches the girl to enjoy life and lets her listen to the Bloodwitch group. This collective is also mentioned in the comic book by Charles Forsman, on which the series is based.

Especially for the project “I don’t like it,” Graham Coxon, together with 16-year-old singer Tatiana Rishaud, recorded an entire album and even came up with a backstory for a non-existent group. As if the band was born in 1983 under the influence of The Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and Mary Chain, and was founded by a couple of young guys in love.

In addition to Bloodwitch, the soundtrack for the series has collected hits from real bands: Pixies, The Kinks, LCD Soundsystem and many others. A list of all the songs that sound in the project "I don't like it" can be viewed, for example, here The I Am Not Okay With This Soundtrack Is Full Of John Hughes Easter Eggs.

3. High Fidelity: Original Soundtrack ("Melomaniac")

  • USA, 2020.
  • Total soundtrack length: 38 minutes.
  • Number of tracks: 11.

Trying to figure out herself, Robin, the owner of an independent record store, makes appointments with all her previous lovers. Meanwhile, her ex-boyfriend Mac returns to town with her new girlfriend.

"Melomaniac" reimagines the 1995 novel High Fidelity and, at the same time, the equally iconic film adaptation with John Cusack in the title role, iconic for connoisseurs of music. Therefore, one could immediately expect that the creators will try to surprise the viewer as much as possible with the auditory variety. Indeed, the selection of compositions turned out to be an order of magnitude more interesting than the plot itself.

You will hear Nina Simone, Death, the Grateful Dead, Impala Syndrome, David Bowie, Blondie and much, much more. It makes no sense to list all the performers, because the series featured more than 100 compositions, most of which, however, were not included in the official soundtrack. But here unofficial selections come to the rescue: the music in them will be enough for you for six hours.
