Touching and informative programs about the transformation of appearance, cleaning the house and finding a couple.
1. Queer Eye
- USA, 2018 - present.
- Reality show.
- Duration: 5 seasons.
- IMDb: 8, 5.
In the relaunch of the popular television show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the concept of the project has changed a lot. If in the original five gays helped average men to “pump”, now the “magnificent five” with equal enthusiasm transforms the lives of various people: a modest teacher, a disabled person, a divorced father, an eccentric Latin American.
But the most important thing is that, unlike Russian programs about the transformation of appearance like "Fashionable Sentence" or "Take it off immediately," the presenters do not try to remake the wards to their liking. On the contrary, the "five" helps people accept themselves as they are. The heroes do not change dramatically, they only become more beautiful, well-groomed, and most importantly, self-confident.
2. Scammers
- UK, 2003 - present.
- Reality show.
- Duration: 17 seasons.
- IMDb: 8, 2.
Project "Scammers" is a bit like the American program "Wheelbarrow to Pump": the host Mike Brewer buys his obsolete old cars at a low price and gives them into the reliable hands of mechanic Ed China. Dealers then resell the completely restored models.
The Discovery Channel has another iconic car project: the legendary Top Gear show. The hosts of this program did so many things: for example, they tried to swim across the English Channel on a makeshift watercraft or rode in clown costumes across Vietnam on motorcycles.
3. Mythbusters
- USA, Australia, 2003 - present.
- Reality show.
- Duration: 21 seasons.
- IMDb: 8, 3.
A legendary show in which fearless presenters Jamie Heineman and Adam Savage check a wide variety of stories, rumors, urban legends and common misconceptions for the truth. Were Americans on the Moon? Is it possible to get out of the coffin? Is a coin dropped from a tall building capable of killing a passer-by?
Of course, when checking the next legend or hoax, almost every time you get a very funny or unexpected result. During the existence of the program, the presenters have dispelled over 1,000 myths. And in 2018, Heinemann and Savage were replaced by new "destroyers" - Brian Lowden and John Lang.
4. Survive at any cost
- UK, 2006-2020.
- Reality show.
- Duration: 7 seasons.
- IMDb: 8, 1.
Brave Bear Grylls boldly goes to places of the planet unsuitable for life, having with him a minimum set of things: water, a penknife and flint for kindling a fire. Sometimes the extreme takes with him another rope, skis or a parachute. Watching the presenter's adventures is not only exciting, but also useful: after all, the former special forces soldier gives viewers valuable instructions on how to survive in the most unfriendly conditions.
Wherever the charming Grills has not visited during seven seasons of the transfer: uninhabited islands of the Pacific Ocean, impenetrable jungles of Costa Rica, African savannahs. The presenter even visited Russia - in the second season there were two whole issues about survival in the Siberian taiga and mountains.
5. BattleBots
- UK 2015 - present.
- Reality show, TV game.
- Duration: 5 seasons.
- IMDb: 8, 0.
The impressive battle of robots from the Disney cartoon "City of Heroes" turns out to be not such a fiction. Indeed, in the UK, there have long been programs about the duels of fighting machines (for example, Robot Wars). In the modern show BattleBots, teams compete with each other, exhibiting homemade radio-controlled robots.
The rules are simple: in three minutes, opponents must break someone else's device. Additional traps - crushers, saws and hammers - add to the sharpness of the fight.
6. Done
Nailed It!
- USA, 2018 - present.
- Reality show.
- Duration: 6 seasons.
- IMDb: 7, 4.
The title and idea of the show are inspired by home craftsmen who are trying to cook various interesting dishes on their own using recipes from the Internet, but in the end they understand: something went wrong, and the reality is slightly different from expectations.
Each episode features duels between amateur bakers. The latter are trying to recreate culinary masterpieces from the picture (needless to say, it often turns out not very well). The winner, as expected, receives a solid prize.
7. Hell's kitchen
- USA, 2005 - present.
- Reality show, culinary show.
- Duration: 20 seasons.
- IMDb: 7, 1.
The intensity of passions in "Hell's Kitchen" is not inferior to "The Last Hero": here professional and not so professional cooks compete for the position of a chef in a prestigious restaurant. The task is significantly complicated by the host - the famous British chef and renowned lover of non-literary vocabulary Gordon Ramsay.
Ramsay broadcasts in a very expressive manner: he shouts, swears mercilessly and does not hesitate to offend the participants. For this, in fact, he is famous.
8. Captured by unnecessary things
- USA, 2010-2014.
- Reality show, documentary.
- Duration: 8 seasons.
- IMDb: 6, 6.
In the Russian language there is no suitable word that could correctly describe the problem of compulsive hoarding, except perhaps “Plyushkin's syndrome”. But in English there is the concept of "chording", and the pathological accumulators themselves are called chorders.
Perhaps the most famous among the programs that scare the viewer with eerie pictures of household garbage is Hoarding: Buried Alive on the TLC channel. The presenters are not only taking measures to de-clutter the chorders' housing, but are also trying to figure out how to help their wards cope with psychological problems.
9. Cleaning with Marie Kondo
- USA, 2019 - present.
- Reality show.
- Duration: 1 season.
- IMDb: 6, 6.
Cheerful Japanese woman Marie Kondo teaches Americans to put things in order in the house according to their own method: get rid of things that do not cause sparks of joy, and put the rest so that they can be easily found.
Perhaps you are not close to certain postulates of Kondo - for example, you are not eager to get rid of bookshelves or unnecessary trinkets dear to your heart. But at the same time, heeding the advice of the presenter in order to reduce the number of things, to abandon impulsive purchases, or to start taking a more responsible attitude towards consumption, is still useful.
10. Dating Around
- USA, 2019 - present.
- Reality show.
- Duration: 2 seasons.
- IMDb: 6, 4.
The realistic blind dating series Dating Around is strikingly different from other TV shows dedicated to finding your partner. At first glance, the concept does not shine with originality: in each episode, the participants go on five different dates, and in the final they decide who they liked the most.
But at the same time, the project is completely devoid of the disadvantages of unrealistic programs about love at first sight. Here people just spend their time, as they are accustomed to in ordinary life: they sit in a restaurant, walk around the city, get embarrassed when they make a bad joke or the conversation goes in the wrong place. Another undoubted plus of Dating Around is its diversity: among the characters there are people of different backgrounds, orientations and ages.
