Coverage, conversion, important topics and cool mechanics. We have chosen projects for 2020, which we are especially proud of!
What galaxy do your eyes look like
A long time ago, in a distant, distant galaxy … a cluster of stars was born that looks like your eyes. And in 2020, Lifehacker and Bausch + Lomb made a game that can show you this very place. We have developed a neural network and taught it to recognize the iris in a selfie. And then - to find in the NASA database similar stars, supernovae, galaxies and nebulae. The result is a cosmically beautiful and interesting project, into which users have uploaded more than 25,000 photos.
In just a couple of months, the project team did an amazing job. We studied the entire NASA database, selected hundreds of photographs, wrote dozens of texts about galaxies, constellations and nebulae, ranked all possible shades of human eyes and, finally, developed an algorithm for recognizing and matching the iris of the eye with one of the objects of our vast Universe. It was a real challenge and we did it! On the very first day after the release, readers uploaded about 2,000 of their photos.
Podcast "Plantain"
The joint project of Lifehacker and Yandex Go turned out to be so cool that it was ranked 28th in the best podcasts on Yandex. Music. Plantain tells the audience how to adapt life to the changes brought about by the pandemic without losing energy and productivity. In each episode, we tried to provide useful advice, find inspiring stories and introduce our audience to interesting characters. It seems we did a pretty good job.
Grigory Bakhin “Yandex Go” marketer.
In a difficult year with an ever-changing content creation environment, we decided to make a situational podcast that will go down in history. The idea was to give a voice to the people who were at the forefront of the fight against the coronavirus. We selected heroes who spoke about themselves and their profession in the context of the pandemic. The result is such a polyphonic document.
By the third season, it became clear that we had changed, and with us, our habits and even cities. It seems that urbanists know this best of all, so we decided to invite Pavel Gnilorybov to analyze our new reality with him and adapt to it.
I want to say a huge thank you to the Lifehacker team for their work, initiative and professionalism. I hope that in the new year we can create many more cool projects that will allow users to become the best version of themselves!
How to keep up with life: the rules of modern man
It was once fashionable to wear fur coats and drive an SUV. And now - to consume wisely and travel in an electric car. And these are just the most obvious changes. Together with Samsung, we made a special project dedicated to how to keep up with the times. More than 228 thousand unique users have looked at the project's articles! And especially our readers liked what you need to do at 30 so that it does not hurt excruciatingly at 40: it was read by 80 thousand people.
Anna Krachek Lead editor of special projects.
This is a big cool project that combines several formats at once: it has articles, podcasts and a test. It was difficult to do it, but interesting. We had a very limited time frame, so everyone had to work to the limit. But the result was worth it: both we and the readers liked the materials. I am glad that the project turned out to be not only beautiful and interesting, but also useful. In it, we talked about really important things: conscious consumption, smart economy, modern values. It seems to me that when we talk with the audience about such topics, we make the world a little better.
In safety
Together with the Insurance House VSK we have published a stream of 16 articles on various aspects of security. In the summer, readers were warned how to avoid a tick bite and what to do if it happened. In the fall - they talked about the rules of the road and safety for schoolchildren during the epidemic. The project turned out to be very useful and our audience liked it. more than 64 thousand people have read about driving errors that annoy all drivers. And about the calculation of sick leave in 2020 - more than 83 thousand.
Alexander Okhrimenko Director of Media Projects Development, VSK Insurance House.
The insurance industry is densely shrouded in stereotypes and fears. We came to Lifehacker with the task of dispelling myths and honestly telling how modern insurance solutions help in the life of each of us. The result is a great custom project with integrations. The project team worked out the agenda with a high quality, and we got into the worst pains of the audience.
As a result, the indicator of only unique users in the project exceeded the target by more than 200%. Part of the audience of the project, who previously believed in myths, now trusts only facts and uses modern solutions of the VSK Insurance House.
Stylish on the outside, powerful on the inside. Life hacker tests ASUS gaming laptop
The custom ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop review page is one of the most beautiful projects of 2020. The combination of motion, cursor lighting and cool design perfectly complements the fascinating story of the tests our tester Alena put through this gaming laptop. By the way, he showed himself excellently in battles with monsters and searches of dungeons, and the material showed a conversion of 8, 6%. Everyone was happy, and especially Alena - it is not every day that you manage to add 12 hours of gaming to the account of the working day.
Where to keep your family photo archive so you never lose it
In 2020, we learned that 37% of our readers are most likely to lose their family photo or video archive by accident. And we prepared a useful article together with Synology so that this fear does not come true. The material talks about network storages that will help preserve important documents, memories from childhood or pictures that no one should see. Conversion rate of 14, 26% clearly indicates that our readers needed this article. And we don't need another!
9 in-demand professions with a steep salary that you can master from scratch
Let's go with the trump cards: 241 thousand 155 unique views. This is cool for any article, but it's especially nice that so many readers were attracted by our partner material, prepared together with Skillbox. We looked at professions that not only inspire but also pay well. And also - they left useful links to courses that are guaranteed to help you enter a new specialty. Read if you feel like you're doing something wrong or don't know what to become when you grow up.
Soda for the people. 21 life hacks for all occasions
Together with Food Soda, we have made a large special project with useful life hacks on the use of soda in all areas of life, for example, in cooking, cleaning the house, and even with domestic injuries. All the materials of the project can be called successful, but our readers especially liked the article "". It was read by 188,538 unique users on Lifehacker.
Julia Zotova Project manager.
I really enjoyed working on this project. Before it even really started, the whole team was already animatedly discussing the ideas of texts and design at the planning meeting. This is understandable: Lifehacker is famous for simple and sometimes unexpected, but always working tips, and a product with such potential came to us! As a result, our expectations were justified: the overall KPI exceeded the forecast four times!
And I think I know the secret of this success. After the release of all the unexpected tricks with soda, the proofreader Lena Gritsun and I decided to give life hacks a home test drive. I started cleaning the once white sneakers, and Lena started making bath bombs. Everything worked out!
In this project, in general, everything was fine: the product, and the idea, and the speed and quality of the team's work, but the most important thing is the complete trust of the client (accepted practically without amendments!) And consonance with the interests of the readers.
The stereotype of the infinity of soda was confirmed by us personally: not a single pack has ended during testing.
Business Development Games
The games provide a help button from DPiIR
In 2020, the work of many professions has become like riding a burning bike in a burning room. But the entrepreneurs also juggled with burning balls. To help businessmen to distract themselves and find new useful tools, we made two business simulators together with DPiIR - the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development of the city of Moscow. In the first game, the challenge is ambitious - to bring the company to the international market. In the second, it is pragmatic - to survive the pandemic with new rules, taxes and problems. Activate your inner Jeff Bezos and play both!
Dima Yanyuk Creator.
For the project with DPiIR, we invented and implemented two narrative text-based business games.
In the first, we tested entrepreneurs for the main skill for 2021: to survive and keep their business. In the second, the players had to find the inner Elon Musk and help a small startup quickly and mercilessly conquer the international market.
For more fun, we have provided the gameplay of both games with fun features. In the first game, a smart assistant from the Department of Design and Development appeared, which helped to make accurate anti-crisis decisions (and at the same time referred to the main image from the client's stand at the Innovation Forum). In the second, a random market factor worked, which at any moment could spoil the game with unexpected news about a new strange virus or, conversely, help a pleasant jump in the rate.
Both activations perfectly solved the main task of the client: to tell the maximum number of people, and especially businessmen, that subsidies from the Moscow Government are not a myth, they exist and can really help if you are rooting for your business and know how to manage it, and not just hope for a magic money pill.
In addition, entrepreneurs were additionally attracted and encouraged to participate in the games by the availability of final prizes - free advertising materials for their company for the entire 30 million audience of Lifehacker - a reward no worse than any subsidy, I can tell you.
Thanks to cooperation with DPIR, we managed to implement a long-standing idea with a classic narrative text game (as many as two times). It is pleasant and unexpected when such bold decisions are made by clients from a seemingly conservative environment.
Check if you know how to eat sushi and rolls correctly
Admit it, do you dip fish or rice in soy sauce? Only half of Lifehacker's readers answered this question correctly. Japanese cuisine has long been popular in Russia, but few people know all the intricacies of oriental etiquette. Together with "Tanuki" we collected the most intricate moments and made a difficult but interesting test. And also - we played a set of rolls from the restaurant. We got great pleasure from the project and the active participation of our readers in the competition.
Think you are eco-friendly?
Answer tricky questions and immediately get detailed information on the topic. This is how a new format that we developed in 2020 works - an interactive longread. We dedicated a special project with Audi to ecology and sustainable consumption. They brought up the most confusing topics - the root cause of the carbon footprint, the problems of the fashion industry, waste sorting - and helped the readers to understand them. And at the same time they talked about the new Audi e-tron - a powerful SUV that works without harm to the planet. Everything in this project is great: product, design, texts and mechanics.
What the transport of the future will look like
Many fantasy stories have been written about the technology of the future, which often do not come true. But in the project with Hyundai, we were as pragmatic as possible: we were inspired not by the predictions of futurists for the distant future, but by real developments that are reshaping the transport industry right now. The project turned out to be practically scientific: hydrogen technologies, robotics, environmental innovations from different countries. We are proud!
Tonya Rubtsova Author.
Changing cities and transport is one of the most pressing topics in recent years. Working on a project with Hyundai, I felt the opportunity to touch something progressive. It was interesting to understand the new vehicles and technologies that are being developed right now. But at the same time it is not easy - I had to dig deep and choose the very thing. For example, I learned the difference between a hydrogen engine and hydrogen cells and many more interesting facts.
With the help of the project, we invited readers to the exhibition "The Future of Travel" at Hyundai MotorStudio in Moscow. In my opinion, it's great to wake up interest in the topic and talk about a place where you can learn more about innovations in transport and see developments with your own eyes.
600 years of history of Moscow rings
The joint project of Lifehacker and Avtodor - Toll Roads tells about the roads and streets of Moscow: modern and long gone into oblivion. We shared with our readers interesting facts about the construction of the Central Ring Road, followed the growth of the Moscow Ring Road, figured out how Moscow might look if the third transport ring was built according to the original plan. In a word, they completely covered 600 years of the history of Moscow rings. They also offered readers to take a test on the knowledge of the old names of the streets of the capital. Do you want to go to the Trolley Row or to hell in the middle of nowhere?
Tanya Repina Senior Designer.
A large project for the client "Avtodor - Toll Roads" includes a podcast, 7 articles, a test and a timeline. The task of the design department was to stylistically link all the materials, make an interesting project and give an opportunity to look at the history of Moscow rings from a new perspective. We worked on the project in tandem with Lifehacker's designer Yulia Derzhavina.
The idea for the project came up very quickly. We decided to use collages to connect old and new, history and modernity - this is how micro-animations of characters appeared in the test and on the timeline. At first we were a little worried that it would be too frivolous for the client, but we were pleasantly surprised that Avtodor - Toll Roads helped us in everything. It's always a pleasure to work with such helpful people. One of the joint solutions, for example, was the introduction of animation with paving stones.
The project turned out to be easy to understand and interesting from a historical point of view. We got only positive emotions from the work.
What to do with old furniture from IKEA and not only: 5 useful ideas
Almost all of us have something from IKEA at home. Tables, sofas, armchairs, shelves, cupboards (and wine glasses!). In a creative collaboration with IKEA, we told what to do when furniture breaks down or becomes unnecessary. We offered readers a lot of ideas: from restoration to eco-recycling or donations. And they also shared IKEA services that help to do all this. Did you know you can sell old furniture back to the store? And what does IKEA give free spare parts for its products? The article came out extremely useful and showed a conversion rate of 7%. This is Love.
Margarita Zhukova IKEA Communications Business Partner.
The project about what can be done with old furniture was implemented by the Lifehacker team in a fairly short time. We wanted to show that there are many simple solutions for furniture that at some point turned out to be unnecessary: it can be repaired, sold, renewed, donated to charity or recycled, and so on.
Thanks to the enthusiasm and well-coordinated work of our colleagues, we managed to create a really high-quality material, which tells in an accessible and interesting way about what IKEA services can help give furniture a second life. A bright visualization with BLOCHEI sharks (a cult product of the IKEA store) perfectly complemented the design of our guide, making it special and easily recognizable.
What to do if you suddenly realize that you hate your job
A difficult and painful topic for many, which we tried to analyze in as much detail as possible with Yandex. Practicum. And we succeeded - a conversion of 7, 8% will not let you lie! In this article, we have collected seven questions that can be painfully difficult to answer, and suggested to our readers the tools to solve them. They also gave inspiring examples of people who changed their profession after 30 years and still succeed! We hope that the material helped someone decide on an important step and make their life better.
Nika Dmitrieva Lead brand communications Yandex. Practicum.
When working on content, we are always guided by the marketing of useful action, in which the reader learns something really important to himself. And the results of this special project have once again shown that this is the right strategy. Thanks to the Lifehacker team for their keen understanding of the needs of their audience and the communication tasks of Yandex. Practicum.
How to proceed
The How to Apply Stream is an education project consisting of ten articles, five of which were partnerships and attracted the attention of more than 318,000 people. We are truly proud of this collaboration with Sberbank. more than 85 thousand of our users have read about myths about higher education. And with a huge list of Russian universities - 138 thousand. All articles were highly active in the comments. Together with important tips, they released fan material about funny traditions of students: bandaging monuments and other fun. It turned out cool!
Olga Makarova Commercial Director.
Clients from the educational segment do not come to us often, because from their point of view, we are not the most obvious choice. Although Lifehacker is a huge federal media with a completely motley audience, among which there are many both students and people who directly or indirectly influence their decisions. This is a very desirable segment for us. And I am glad that in 2020 it showed great dynamics.
The flow "How to do" is really one of the most successful projects in terms of quality indicators: coverage of materials is almost three times exceeded, a fairly high time on the page, readability and conversion are also at the level. Separately, it is very pleasant that the client trusted our experience and listened to the recommendations in ideas, in texts, and in design. This project was interesting and useful to the audience, which means that we did everything right.
How to prepare for the New Year
In December, when very few people expected something good from 2020, we opened the box with surprises and released the Advent calendar. 31 useful things for every day, which we came up with together with the company "Brest-Litovsk". Once a day, throughout December, we opened a new calendar window and helped our readers get ready for the New Year. The calendar covered all aspects: buying gifts, ways to decorate the Christmas tree in an original way, budget, unusual traditions and much more, which makes the holiday special. The efforts of the team were worth it - the project came out just bombing.
