Sometimes you need to take a break and calmly assess the situation.

8 bad reasons to quit, even if emotions overwhelm
8 bad reasons to quit, even if emotions overwhelm

Reasons for dismissal can vary, and in general they all deserve respect. After all, you are an adult. And if you have decided something, then you have every right to do so. But in some cases it is better not to act impulsively.

1. You are on the verge of burnout

Burnout can lead to exhaustion, decreased performance, and mental problems. It is the result of chronic stress in the workplace. Dismissal in such a situation seems logical: a burned-out person needs rest and absence of anxiety.

But leaving your job will lead to lower income, which will make you anxious for other reasons. And if you get a new job right away, you run the risk of not coping with burnout.

Therefore, first you should try to solve the problem without radical changes. The best thing to do is talk to your boss. Explain that recently the volume of tasks has increased significantly or responsibility has increased and you can no longer cope. Or you need an extra vacation. As a last resort, you can ask for a vacation at your own expense - a sort of sample dismissal.

Perhaps they will unload you a little, calm you down or give you other tasks. Or maybe you find out that you have imposed some business and responsibility on yourself and in vain.

Start thinking about getting fired if it turns out that there is no light at the end of the work tunnel.

2. Work has become boring

If you perform similar tasks for a long time, work turns into a routine that does not bring any emotions. Days merge into one, you fall into apathy. But the times are still alive in memory when you came to the office with enthusiasm, and you would like to return them.

Firing off and looking for a new job with a broader range of tasks looks like the right move. But there is a risk that the new place will want to make full use of your experience. And then you will have to do basically the same thing as before. On the other hand, trying an unfamiliar role under stressful conditions (and a new job is anxiety and tension) can be uncomfortable. Therefore, for a start, it is worth evaluating career prospects in the old place.

It is important to understand that no one but you will make boring work interesting. Even creativity can become a routine. You need to look for motivation first of all in yourself.

There are tangible benefits to growing in the same company. First, you know its specifics and can easily deal with new responsibilities. Secondly, they are familiar with colleagues and management. And if you worked well before, then you can count on loyalty to yourself.

3. One of your colleagues pisses you off

It is certainly not worth working in a toxic team whenever possible. But it happens that colleagues are generally normal. And someone alone is so annoying that under you the chair periodically melts due to the flaring of the fifth point. Emotions are so strong that the office becomes associated with a bad mood. And in the end, you want to give up everything, just to no longer face this person.

But quitting just because someone pisses you off is hardly worth it. In this matter, it is important to separate the wheat from the chaff. Understand if a person interferes with your work and if somehow influences it. For example, if he constantly assigns your merit and then receives awards for this, something needs to be done (but not necessarily quit). If the person just pisses off because they don't behave the way you like, you should change your attitude. The world is full of annoying people, every company has them. And if you get angry because of everyone, you won't have enough nerves or companies.

All this also applies to the boss. If he is unfair, asks something inadequate from you, or fines you for nothing, this is a reason to leave. But if you are a vegan, and he sticks with his meat, this is hardly a reason to change jobs.

4. Your friend quit

If buddies have gone to other companies, you can feel devastated. You used to have fun together at lunch. And now it seems that the comrades went further, but you stayed. Therefore, it is time to look for a new job, or even just quit.

Try to assess the real state of affairs without emotion. If you have been planning to leave for a long time and the dismissal of your colleagues has become an additional motivation, it will be logical to write a statement. But if you like the job and you have prospects, there is no point in giving up everything. You can meet with friends at other times.

5. Working conditions have changed

Transformation within a company can be frightening and annoying. You used to work in one program, now in another. Yesterday they reported monthly, today weekly. It seems that it is easier to leave than to delve into everything again.

Change is normal. If the company does not improve, including in internal processes, it will gradually decline.

Of course, it would be naive to think that all changes are for the better. But in order to assess their consequences, it is necessary to work in the new conditions. And then make an informed decision.

6. You've ended your office romance

Advice not to start such a relationship makes sense. Both personal and work life are important parts of existence. An affair with a colleague mixes them together. But if the relationship comes to a sad ending, it is not so easy to divide the spheres of life back.

Indeed, every day to see a former passion at work is not easy. If a partner begins to intrigue, it is doubly difficult. But the most adequate solution for both would be to behave like adults. Discuss the situation, agree on neutrality. Being unemployed and out of money is probably worse than being out of a relationship, so it's in your mutual best interest.

7. Someone close to you need care

This is not entirely gender-neutral, because men are much less expected to quit their jobs and retrain as nurses. It is mostly women who take the hit: they quit and provide care to someone whose health has fallen into disrepair.

But, before writing a statement, it is important to weigh the pros and cons. It is clear that the desire to surround a loved one with care is great. The threat of public condemnation is also pressing if you do not. But the patient is likely to need professional care. A specially trained person knows how to do everything correctly and quickly. And money is needed for his services. They will also be needed for food and other important things. And if you drop out of professional life for several months and even more so for years, this will probably affect your salary and career growth.

Therefore, it is important to think carefully about everything and decide how to combine caring for a loved one and making money efficiently.

8. You made a big mistake

In such cases, sometimes you just don't want to go back to the office. It’s embarrassing to look your boss and colleagues in the eye. It seems that no one will ever forgive you for failure. It's easier to quit and disappear.

But from a career perspective, it's best not to. First, everyone makes mistakes, just of a different scale. Secondly, it is not entirely fair to run away and leave colleagues to clean up the consequences of someone else's flaws. Finally, it’s better to quit on a high note and leave a good impression of yourself. At least in case the HR from the new place of work decides to check what they think about the person in the old one. So it's better to first bravely admit the mistake, deal with its consequences, and then think about changing the company.
