In advertising, you can often see photographs of gadgets falling from a height, lying in the dust or getting wet in the pouring rain. However, when choosing, you need to look not at these beautiful advertising materials, but at the protection class on the box or case of the device.
Each device claiming to be a protected device must be tested according to the classification system for the degree of protection of the enclosure of electrical equipment and other devices against the penetration of solid objects, dust and water in accordance with the international standard IEC 60529 (DIN 40050, GOST 14254). As a result, it will be assigned one of the protection classes, and the corresponding marking will appear in the documentation. It consists of two letters (IP - Ingress Protection) and two numbers, the first of which means protection from the ingress of solid objects, the second - from the ingress of water.
For example, a regular household electrical outlet is rated IP22. It is only protected against finger penetration and vertically dripping water. While travel and special gadgets must have IP68 protection, which means they are dustproof and can be used underwater.
It is these numbers that you need to pay attention to when buying a device. Here are two tables that decipher the meaning of the first and second digits in the marking.
The first number is protection against the penetration of foreign objects

Second digit - protection against water penetration

| 1 | Protection against vertically falling drops |
| 2 | The device is protected from vertically falling drops when tilted up to 15 ° |
| 3 | Protected against water spray, sprayed at an angle of up to 60 ° to any vertical surfaces of the device |
| 4 | Protection against water spray at any angle |
| 5 | Protection against water jets |
| 6 | Protected against high pressure water jets |
| 7 | Protection against short immersion in water (to a depth of 1 m) |
| 8 | Protection against prolonged immersion in water (to a depth of more than 1 m for more than 30 minutes) |
Now that you are familiar with the requirements of the standards, you can always determine which smartphones have real protection against dust and water, and which ones just show off staged photos in advertising brochures. Do not forget to pay attention to this code when buying a new gadget!
